Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an U.S. External Affairs Associate to help advance engagement with civil rights organizations, civil society, researchers, and other external stakeholders shaping AI policy in the United States.

You will design strategy, identify priority stakeholders, and build external relationships to create concrete proof points that strengthen public trust. Reporting to the External Affairs Lead, you will work across multiple teams, help organize partner briefings, translate complex policy

Qualifications

• Deep familiarity with the US civil society, civil rights, and tech policy landscape.
• Proven ability to design and execute stakeholder engagement strategies tied to policy or public trust objectives.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, briefing, and presentation skills.
• Ability to translate complex AI policy topics into clear external materials.
• Experience working with cross-functional policy, legal, safety, product, and research teams.
• Strong judgment and integrity on high-salience, sensitive issues.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain trusted relationships with civil society and policy stakeholders.
• Design engagement strategies, stakeholder maps, and briefing materials.
• Support federal and state engagement efforts with credible voices and local proof points.
• Prepare executives for external meetings, briefings, and events.
• Translate complex AI policy topics into accessible materials for external audiences.
• Coordinate with internal teams to ensure accurate, thoughtful engagement.
• Track relationships, outcomes, risks, and follow-ups for continuity.
