Job summary

Barnard Academy and Reading Elementary School are seeking an Elementary School Counselor to join two small, close-knit communities in Barnard, VT. This 0.70 FTE role is shared between Barnard Academy and Reading Elementary, fostering strong ties across both campuses.

The counselor will support students’ social-emotional well-being, deliver SEL instruction, and collaborate with staff, families, and other professionals to create inclusive, emotionally safe learning environments.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.
• Valid Vermont Educator License with endorsement.
• Experience working with elementary-aged students in a school setting.
• Familiarity with the Second Step curriculum is preferred.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, de-escalation and collaborative problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively across two school communities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support school-wide efforts that promote kindness, inclusion, belonging, and a positive school climate.
• Deliver classroom-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction, including use of the Second Step curriculum.
• Provide individual and small-group counseling to develop coping skills and social-emotional skills.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other professionals to develop and monitor student behavior supports.
• Provide timely support, de-escalation, and crisis response for students in distress.
• Partner with families to identify strategies and resources for student success at school and home.
• Participate as a collaborative member of school-based student support teams.
