Gray Media seeks a State Capitol Reporter to cover Minnesota politics from the Twin Cities hub. You will report for KTTC-TV/Gray Media stations across the state, delivering sharp, engaging content that resonates on air and online.

You’ll shoot, write, edit, and provide live contributions, shaping coverage during sessions and elections. You’ll build relationships with lawmakers and communities, bring context to complex bills, and own the beat with independence and urgency, while meeting deadlines

Qualifications

• 2+ years of on-air experience in a newsroom.
• Digital-first mindset for multiplatform storytelling.
• Ability to shoot, write, and edit content and go live from the field.
• Strong interest in state government and the ability to explain complex topics clearly.

Responsibilities

• Own the Capitol beat, reporting on sessions, policy shifts, and political developments.
• Craft compelling content for four Gray stations and national audiences as needed.
• Shoot, write, and edit content for digital and broadcast, ensuring quick turnaround.
• Take a leading role in election coverage with urgency and accuracy.
• Coordinate with state newsrooms for live hits and localized angles.
• Build and maintain a robust network of lawmakers, advocates, and community leaders.

We’re looking for a high-energy, autonomous State Capitol Reporter to be the face of Minnesota politics for our stations across the state. Based in the heart of the Twin Cities, you’ll be the bridge between the halls of power and the communities we serve—delivering news that lives on every screen, from the 6 PM broadcast to a viral social thread.

• Own the Capitol: Be the first to know—and the first to report—on the legislative sessions, policy shifts, and political maneuvers that shape Minnesota.
• Tell stories that travel: Craft compelling content for four major Gray stations (KBJR, KEYC, KTTC, KVLY) and occasionally represent Minnesota on a national stage.
• Master the multi-platform pivot: Shoot, write, and edit your own content, ensuring it’s optimized for a digital-first audience before it even hits the airwaves.
• Lead the election charge: Take a featured role during election cycles, breaking down races and results with urgency and authority.
• Connect the dots: Coordinate with newsrooms across the state to provide live hits and localized angles on statewide issues.
• Build a source network: Quickly develop deep relationships with lawmakers, advocates, and community leaders to uncover the stories others miss.

• Technical scrappiness: You can shoot, edit, and go live from the field (and yes, you can handle the 50 lbs of gear that makes the magic happen).
• Political curiosity: You have a deep interest in state government and the ability to explain "how it works" without the boring jargon.
• Independence and urgency: You thrive in a remote setup where you’re the boss of your beat, meeting deadlines with ease and a "desire to win."
