Employment Type:

Base Hourly:

$17.53

A13, 9.25 months

Performance Pay:

Available annually

New Hire Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to aten-year maximum

New Hire Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Job Summary:

To facilitate high-level, Socratic style group tutorial sessions; to process student tutorial request forms to determine appropriate student tutoring groupings; and to work independently with student groups under the direction of the classroom teacher.

AVID,an elective class, is a college-preparatory program for Junior High and High School students who have high potential despite average grades. The AVID support system includes study skills, college student involvement and motivational activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process student tutorial requests to determine appropriate groupings
  • Work independently with student groups, under the direction of the classroom teacher, to facilitate high-level, Socratic style group tutorial sessions
  • Work students through a process of presenting, asking, and answering questions to achieve understanding of points of confusion around requested topics
  • Help students process the thinking needed for conceptual understanding
  • Provide positive reinforcement to acknowledge the students’ academic growth
  • Assess student work associated with the tutorial process
  • Collaborate regularly with classroom teacher to determine effectiveness of tutorial process
  • Perform recordkeeping tasks, as required, to provide accurate retrieval of data in support of the AVID tutorial program
  • Participate in district-sponsored training as assigned
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or 60 college credit hours; current enrollment in or recent graduate of college or university

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Tutors work in middle schools and high schools, often in classrooms or designated tutoring areas
  • They support students in small groups or one-on-one sessions, often during or after regular school hours
  • AVID tutors collaborate with teachers, AVID coordinators, and other tutors to support students' academic development
  • Tutors work closely with students who are often college-bound but underrepresented or from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Light physical activity—sitting, standing, and walking around classrooms or school buildings
  • Some light lifting of materials (books, papers, AVID binders), typically less than 25 pounds
