VACANCIES: 1
Performs difficult skilled technical work supervising and participating in the maintenance of the municipal golf course, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Parks Superintendent. Full supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.
  • Supervises crews engaged in the maintenance of turfgrass throughout the park system.
  • Assigns and plans various work tasks and follows up to ensure that tasks were done properly.
  • Trains and evaluates the work of assigned personnel.
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of employees.
  • Recommends candidates for hire.
  • Recommends disciplinary action and termination when necessary.
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of golf course grounds, fairways, tees and greens.
  • Rakes sand traps; empties trash cans; applies fertilizers and chemicals.
  • Applies fertilizers to athletic fields and outside areas.
  • Applies pesticides to turf areas for weed, insect and disease control.
  • Repairs or contracts the repair of a variety of reel and rotary mowers, tractors, trucks, sprayers, trimmers, edgers, chain saws and other turf related equipment.
  • Acquires parts for equipment.
  • Performs tree and landscape maintenance.
  • Prunes trees; spreads mulch; picks up fallen limbs.
  • Initiates purchase orders and acquisitions for various turf maintenance related materials, supplies, chemicals, equipment, etc.
  • Maintains records regarding fertilizer and pesticide applications, equipment repair and maintenance, turf management activities and training; prepares various reports; reviews and submits time sheets.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • Associates/Technical degree with coursework in turfgrass management, or related field and considerable experience in turfgrass management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices used in golf course maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of turf diseases and the chemicals necessary to treat same.
  • Ability to analyze soil conditions and devise a formula to correct unhealthy conditions.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Skill in the operation of golf course equipment.
  • Ability to train subordinates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, associates and the general public.
  • Possession of North Carolina Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License (Turf and Ornamental Category) and North Carolina Division of Water Quality Turfgrass Nutrient Management training certification.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.


This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions; work requires depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
