Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a versatile Tunnel Engineer to join our Arlington, VA office. You will work with our tunnel resource group on underground design and construction projects across transportation, water and wastewater sectors.

Required is a bachelor’s in civil/structural/geotechnical engineering with 5+ years in engineering consultancy; PE license preferred or obtainable within a year. Proficiency in STRAND7, SAP, STAAD and BIM tools is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering is required; a Master's is preferred.
• Professional engineer (PE) license preferred or obtainable within a year.
• 5+ years of engineering consultancy experience focusing on tunnel/underground design.
• Proficient with structural and geotechnical software listed in qualifications.
• Experience with BIM tools and geotechnical data management is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of tunnelling projects in the U.S. and Canada.
• Oversee staff and field investigation programs for data collection and design.
• Contribute to detailed analyses for tunnels and underground structures.
• Develop field instrumentation programs and evaluate collected data.
• Manage staff producing designs, reports, specifications and drawings.
• Prepare client reports including technical memoranda and reports.
• Contribute to proposals and mentor junior/graduate engineers.

Mott MacDonald is seeking professionals to join our ever-expanding tunnel team. We are currently looking for a versatile Tunnel Engineer with a background in structural and geotechnical engineering to join our Arlington, VA office. The successful candidate will be part of our tunnel resource group, focusing on underground design and construction projects. Experience in the transportation and water/wastewater sectors would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities include:

• Support the delivery of our existing portfolio of tunnelling projects in the U.S. and Canada
• Oversight of staff and execution of field investigation programs to collect data for use in design, condition assessments and the preparation of Reports
• Contribution to detailed analyses for our projects involving tunnels and underground structures
• Development of field instrumentation programs and evaluation of collected data
• Management of staff producing design solutions, reports, and contributions to/reviews of specifications and drawings
• Writing reports for submission to clients, including design-related technical memoranda and Reports
• Contribution to and preparation of proposals for submission to clients
• Managing and mentoring junior/graduate engineers and supporting their development

Candidate Specification:

• Bachelor's in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering is required, and a Masters in a related field is preferred
• Professional engineer (PE) license preferred or able to obtain one within a year
• At least 5 years of experience in engineering consultancy (not including education) focusing on tunnel/underground design
• NCTI Certified is preferred
• Proficient in the use of structural software: STRAND7, SAP, STAAD or equivalent
• Proficient in the use of geotechnical software, this may include Plaxis, GeoStudio packages/Slide, Rocscience packages, geotechnical data management (GINT/Holebase). A working knowledge of BIM tools (Bentley/Autodesk) would also be advantageous
• Demonstratable record in design with experience in geotechnical engineering, ground characterization for soil and rock and a working knowledge of concrete, steel and foundation design
• Interest in underground design and construction for the transport, water or waste water Sectors and multidisciplinary working
• Strong references from past managers or clients

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
