Job summary

The Chief Mate reports directly to the Master and carries out all lawful orders. As second in command, the Chief Mate is in charge of the vessel in the Master’s absence, with all crew members subject to his/her orders concerning vessel operation and maintenance. The Master remains available for consultation.


In matters affecting safety of the vessel and/or environment, the
Chief Mate shall be responsible for:

  • Complying with the Company’s MS requirements related to the position;
  • Acting as head of the deck department;
  • Acting as vessel Safety Officer;
  • Assuming command if the Master becomes incapacitated;
  • Identifying potential vessel hazards related to deck operations and advising the Master accordingly;
  • Cooperating with the Master to maintain a safe and healthy environment according to the Company’s policies;
  • Immediately notifying the Master of any defects affecting safety or environmental risk;
  • Standing a wheelhouse watch when directed;
  • Overseeing crew discipline and well-being as delegated by the Master;
  • Training and familiarization of new Deck personnel and cadets;
  • Acting as PIC for Oil Transfer Operations, including cargo handling and paperwork;
  • Planning and executing cargo operations under the Master’s direction;
  • Ensuring the safe carriage and maintenance of cargo onboard;
  • Managing inerting of cargo tanks and maintaining the I.G. System in cooperation with the Chief Engineer;
  • Supervising cargo watch and PIC duties;
  • Being accountable for the barge, its maintenance, operation, and crew;
  • Ensuring compliance with stability and hull strength requirements;
  • Maintaining cargo and stability records and plans;
  • Controlling storage/handling of IGS Main line branch valves keys;
  • Assisting the Chief Engineer with maintenance, repairs, and surveys;
  • Supervising shore repairs and onboard hull and deck maintenance;
  • Preparing requisitions for materials and maintaining inventory;
  • Assessing work-related risks and issuing permits to work.
