Position Overview
The Trucking Underwriting Specialist is responsible for underwriting, pricing, and managing a specialty portfolio of logging and forestry trucking risks. This role requires in-depth knowledge of logging operations, rural and off-road exposures, and specialized equipment. The underwriter will focus on disciplined risk selection, profitability, and long-term program performance in alignment with program guidelines and risk appetite.
In addition, the underwriter will work closely with agency partners to develop new submission opportunities, provide exceptional customer service, and strengthen distribution relationships. The role also collaborates with internal departments—including Loss Control, Marketing, and Claims—to ensure a coordinated and successful experience for agents, policyholders, and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite new and renewal business submissions for logging and forestry-related trucking
- operations.
- Review submissions from agents, ensuring all required documentation is complete.
- Evaluate, analyze and document risk characteristics for business eligibility in support of the company’s underwriting guidelines.
- Apply program-specific underwriting guidelines, eligibility criteria and pricing models.
- Make underwriting decisions within assigned authority; refer exceptions as required.
- Manage book of business to achieve program profitability, retention, and growth targets.
- Price risks using approved rating plans, credits/debits, and underwriting judgement
- Deliver timely issuance of quotations, policies, renewals, endorsements and cancellations.
- Evaluate risk characteristics including driver qualifications, loss experience, and all operational exposures.
- Develop high quality company-agency and company-client working relationships.
- Maximize agency and policyholder retention.
- Work with new agents to build relationships, sell culture, and build mutual growth.
- Collaborate with loss control to assess operational hazards and recommend risk improvement measures.
- Work closely with claims to monitor loss trends and adjust underwriting strategies.
- Ensure compliance with state filings, program requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Support ongoing refinement of program guidelines, coverage forms, and underwriting tools.
- Conduct all business in a professional manner and with the highest ethical standards.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained during the course of employment.
- Continue professional growth and development through assisting with company projects, participating in company events, insurance industry functions and through self-study.

Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent underwriting experience
- 3-7 years of commercial auto underwriting experience, with direct experience in logging, forestry or heavy trucking preferred.
Licenses/Credentials
Insurance designations (CPCU, CIC, or equivalent) are a plus.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Experienced casualty underwriter with emphasis on trucking exposures.
- Strong understanding of logging and forestry operations and associated hazards.
- Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations and DOT compliance as applied to logging operations.
- Strong analytical skills and decision-making skills.
- Experience underwriting in a program or niche specialty environment.
- Strong technological skills with ability to use multiple computer applications and programs.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate across many levels within the organization as well as externally.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple submissions and deadlines.
