Universal Waste Systems, Inc. in Vernon, CA is seeking a Driver/Driver Trainee to provide timely, safe, and courteous hauling along an assigned route. The role offers hands-on training to perform essential truck duties while gradually achieving full responsibility.

The Driver Trainee will learn route geography, operate in-cab systems, protect public safety, and comply with hazardous waste handling rules. One year of commercial driving experience is preferred; a valid CDL and DOT medical card are

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid CDL and DOT medical card.
  • At least one year of refuse truck driving experience.
  • Knowledge of waste and recycling operations and safety rules.
  • HS diploma or GED preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Learn route geography and service assigned areas.
  • Operate waste collection vehicles to service bins safely.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and health rules.
  • Use in-cab systems and radios to stay connected with dispatch.
  • Report accidents or issues promptly and accurately.

Driver/Driver Trainee postion at South Gate & Vernon, CA

Description

The primary role of the Driver is to provide timely, efficient, safe and courteous hauling service to customers along an assigned route.

Note: When working as the Driver Trainee, driver is learning essential responsibilities, knowledge, skills and abilities until which time the driver has successfully demonstrated that they are able to complete all functions without direct on-site supervision.

  • Perform daily pre and post trip inspection of vehicle.
  • Learn geography of assigned route and surrounding areas.
  • Service trash, recycling, compost and/or mixed waste bins using various types of collections vehicles.
  • Clean up spills and overflows and return bins to their proper area.
  • Operate vehicles with public safety as your primary responsibility.
  • Utilize in-cab electronic computer systems to follow route and service requirements.
  • Use radio to effectively communicate with dispatch and route supervisors.
  • Observe and comply with hazardous waste and material handling and disposal procedures and regulations as set forth by local, state and federal environmental and health agencies.
  • Report all accidents, injuries or maintenance issues in a timely manner.
  • Observe and comply with all applicable safety regulations, rules, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationship with coworkers and customers.
  • Participate in external, Department and Company-wide trainings to increase skill sets and improve service.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of waste and recycling collection.
  • Basic truck mechanics and parts.
  • Federal, state and local job site health and safety rules, regulations and best practices.

Education, Training & Experience
  • Current and valid commercial driver’s license and DOT medical card.
  • One year of refuse truck driving experience required.
  • Experience in the resource recovery industry preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Note: Those in the Driver Trainee classification require one year of previous commercial driving experience.
