Job summary

Salvation Army in Wheeling, WV is hiring a part-time Donation Driver to assist with donation pickups and transportation to the store. The role involves loading/unloading donations, processing receipts, and maintaining donor relations.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
• One year of experience driving a heavy-duty truck or large van, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

• Confers with the store manager on scheduled donation pick-ups.
• Inspects donated items to ensure they can be used and explains policies to customers.
• Reviews scheduled pick-ups for correct day and location.
• Organizes pickups by most direct routes to save time and fuel.
• Lifts, carries, and loads donations into the truck safely and efficiently.
• Prepares donation receipts and ensures accuracy of the documents.
• Maintains good relationships with donors to promote the Salvation Army image.
• Unloads donations at the store and sorts them appropriately.
• Drives to dump/recycling centers to dispose of non-useful items and recycles.
• Sanitizes furniture, bedding and other items.
• Performs custodial duties and truck maintenance checks.
• Drives carefully and parks in safe, marked spaces.

Salary Range: $14.50 - $15.50 Hourly

Work Schedule: Part-time (up to 28 hours/weekly)

Key Responsibilities:

• Confers regularly with the store manager to maintain awareness of scheduled pick-ups of donations in accordance with the established policy.
• Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
• Reviews scheduled pick-ups to ensure they are scheduled for the correct day of the week and geographical location.
• Organizes scheduled pick-ups by most direct routes to save time and fuel consumption.
• Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
• Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
• Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
• Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at the store and distributes them to appropriate locations in the building.
• Loads truck and drives to the dump and recycling center to dispose of non-useable donations.
• Sanitize furniture, bedding and other items.
• Performs custodial duties at the building as assigned to include, but not limited to, trash collection, sweeping, mopping, general cleaning and setting up tables and chairs/rearranging furniture.
• Ensures the truck meets the scheduled maintenance and performs operator’s maintenance in accordance with established standards.
• Drives carefully and observes/complies with all traffic signs and road/weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers.
• Parks vehicle in a safe and clearly marked parking space.
• Locks vehicle doors when vehicle is not in use.
• Fuels vehicle in accordance with state gasoline regulations and The Salvation Army standards.
• Logs all mileage on standard forms; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
• Arrives at destination according to schedule or telephones ahead when delays occur.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Ability to meet attendance requirements.
• Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull objects (up to 50 lbs.)
• Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
• Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
• Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
• Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
• Ability to drive a heavy-duty truck.
