Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in Berkeley, CA, is hiring a Truck Driver in the Facilities division. Qualifications

  • Valid Class A CDL with Hazmat, tanker and airbrake endorsements.

  • Experience with heavy-duty semi trucks and forklifts (8.5 Tons).
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safety policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pickups, deliveries, sorting, staging, and distribution of packages and materials for Laboratory locations and remote sites; operate forklifts up to 8.5 tons, liftgate trucks, flatbeds, and other equipment.
  • Ensure cargo is loaded, secured, documented, and tracked using barcode scanners and electronic delivery systems; obtain signatures and maintain records; comply with DOT/state regulations.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections, report maintenance issues, maintain clean vehicles and work areas, and report incidents or discrepancies; may serve as lead driver as needed.

Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Truck Driver within the Facilities division. Working under the general direction of the Transportation Logistics Supervisor, you will perform on‑and off‑site pickups and deliveries of materials, goods, and equipment for Laboratory divisions, DOE facilities, UC Berkeley, and other regional locations. You will operate a range of vehicles and equipment, including package vans, liftgate trucks, semi‑tractor trailers, and high‑capacity forklifts (up to 8.5 tons).

This position requires a strong commitment to safety, a valid Class A CDL with Hazmat, tanker, and airbrake endorsements, and DOT Hazmat certification. You may be assigned intrastate long‑haul trips and may direct the work of limited‑term contract employees as assigned by the lead or supervisor.

You Will
  • Conduct pickups, deliveries, sorting, staging, and distribution of packages and materials—including sensitive, refrigerated, hazardous, and high‑value items—for Laboratory locations and remote sites. Safely operate forklifts (up to 8.5 tons), liftgate trucks, flatbeds, semi‑tractor trailers, and other specialized equipment to transport large or heavy loads.
  • Ensure cargo is properly loaded, secured, documented, and tracked using barcode scanners and electronic delivery systems, obtaining required signatures and maintaining shipping records. Comply with all DOT, state, and Laboratory safety policies, including hazardous materials regulations.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections, report maintenance issues, maintain clean vehicles and work areas, and promptly report accidents, hazards, customer concerns, or material discrepancies. May serve as lead driver as assigned to support operational needs.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated 1+ year experience operating medium‑size package vans, liftgate trucks, heavy‑duty semi‑tractor trailer rigs or a combination of vehicles involving 3 or more axles, and high‑capacity forklifts (8.5 Tons Maximum weight capacity).
  • Must possess a valid Class A, California Commercial Driver’s license with hazmat, tanker and air brake endorsements, and a current medical card.
  • Ability to comply with and maintain compliance with Department Of Transportation requirements and Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
  • Ability to perform job duties involving pushing and pulling; climbing, stooping and crouching: reaching, handling and fingering: talking, hearing, and seeing. Includes walking up to an estimated 5,000 – 8,000 steps per day including some stairs.
  • Demonstrated experience with cargo handling and documentation procedures.
  • Expertise in all areas of equipment tie down and proper weight distribution.
  • Demonstrated pre‑trip preparation and vehicle inspection procedures.
  • Demonstrated vehicle and trailer backing, coupling and uncoupling skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal vehicle codes and transport laws governing the vehicle operated, load carried and driver responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated driving ability to operate vehicles in hilly terrain, narrow roadways, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a successful technical team, ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and willingness to work in a flexible, changing work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with peers, superiors and subordinates and to function well in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently on assignments, develop own work methods and procedures, use initiative and judgment, and make decisions within scope of work.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Desired Skills/knowledge
  • Familiarity with all LBNL onsite and remote delivery locations.
  • Familiarity with LBNL and DOT safety standards.
  • Familiarity with LBNL Property Management system (AMS/Sunflower).
  • Familiarity with LBNL iBox Barcode System.
  • Familiarity with Rigging.
Additional Information

  • Appointment type: This is a full‑time career appointment, non‑exempt (hourly paid), eligible for overtime pay.
  • Salary range: The hourly range for this position is $33.02 – $48.05. The hourly rate for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience.
  • Hours: 7am – 3:30pm
