Overview

This recruitment will be used to establish a hiring list for current and future Trooper Trainee positions throughout the state. Apply to the test location nearest you; locations are found throughout Arizona — Phoenix, Tucson, Sierra Vista, Casa Grande, Yuma, Taylor/Holbrook, or Kingman.

Applicants meeting the qualifications will be emailed an invitation with additional testing information. Those successfully completing the written exam portion of the testing process will be placed on a list which will be used to fill current and future vacancies. Future attempts to complete the physical fitness portion will be provided if not initially successful.

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, performs work in a structured program to gain practical work experience in the administrative and operational functions of the Highway Patrol Division. May rotate from assignment to assignment within the agency to learn and contribute to administrative or professional processes. Performs related duties as assigned. This classification is a temporary assignment; no permanent positions are allocated to this classification. Incumbents may remain in this classification up to seven (7) years from the start of the initial assignment but cannot exceed the age of 25 years while in this classification. This classification is designated as uncovered. Incumbent serves at the pleasure of the Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Incumbents in this classification may work full-time or intermittently.

Qualifications
  • Assists Department employees in performing a wide variety of assignments in support of administrative and operational assignments/functions based on the needs of the assigned area.
  • Performs research and prepares reports on assigned topics.
  • Completes scheduled physical and academic training and testing in preparation for attendance of the State Trooper Academy as a Cadet State Trooper.
  • Performs special projects or assignments as directed.
  • Completes specialty training and performs specialty functions as directed by the Department in direct support of its mission.
  • Knowledge of: business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation required to produce and proofread simple written documents.
  • Skill in: the use and operation of a passenger vehicle; the use of a computer keyboard device.
  • Ability to: work independently and as part of a team; establish and maintain effective professional relationships; communicate orally and in writing to present information in a logical and understandable format; work within stringent deadlines to complete work assignments; adapt to changing priorities and assignments; adhere to established policy and laws and use good judgement in safeguarding confidential or sensitive information; work any hours including weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, callouts, and overtime; perform the physical requirements of the work; perform work for extended periods in extreme conditions; operate a two-way radio to communicate with dispatchers during routine and emergency situations; work effectively under stressful and hazardous conditions to respond to highway emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen and a high school graduate or have a GED. Must be at least 18 years of age at the starting date of employment. By the starting date, must be a resident of the state of Arizona and possess a valid Arizona driver license.

Additional Requirements
  • Must obtain ACJIS Terminal Operator Certification within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout the course of this assignment with the Department.
  • Holidays, weekends, and shift work may be required.

Applicants follow a similar application and hiring process as State Troopers and must complete a physical fitness assessment. If a Trooper Trainee does not meet the Cadet State Trooper physical fitness standard during the initial testing, they will have 12 months from their entry into the program to reach the required fitness level and successfully pass the Cadet State Trooper physical fitness test.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office setting.
  • Availability to work irregular hours and/or respond to emergency callouts on a 24-hour basis.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout the State.
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, or bodily fluids.

Must successfully complete the examination process.
