The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS), announces a Trial Attorney opening in Hampden County Conflict Advocacy Office in Springfield. The office will represent indigent adults in District and Superior Courts across Hampden County and serves as the conflicts office when CPCS staff cannot represent a client.

New Trial Attorneys undergo comprehensive training and ongoing CLE, with mentoring and opportunities to handle significant cases, while

Qualifications

Commitment to zealous advocacy for indigent clients.
Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Eligibility to practice law in Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

Interviewing clients.
Arraignment and bail advocacy.
Legal research and writing.
Pretrial investigation including visiting crime scenes, locating and interviewing witnesses, collecting and reviewing documentary evidence.
Preparing and arguing pretrial motions, affidavits and legal memoranda.
Dispositional investigations and advocacy.
Jury and bench trials of criminal cases.
Representation of clients in interlocutory proceedings.
Where appropriate, working with private attorneys on cases assigned through the Private Counsel Division of CPCS.
Other duties as assigned.
