Job summary

The Public Defender Division of the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is seeking Trial Attorneys to provide criminal defense representation in offices throughout Massachusetts.

CPCS provides legal representation to indigent clients charged with crimes in District and Superior Courts, and will hire attorneys throughout 2026 and 2027 for immediate start dates as well as future dates, including Spring and Fall 2027.

Qualifications

• Commitment to zealous advocacy for indigent defendants.
• Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a defense-oriented setting.

Responsibilities

• Interviewing clients.
• Arraignment and bail advocacy.
• Legal research and writing.
• Pretrial investigation including visiting crimescenes, locating and interviewing witnesses, collecting and reviewing documentary evidence.
• Preparing and arguing pretrial motions, affidavits and legal memoranda.
• Dispositional investigations and advocacy.
• Jury and bench trials of criminal cases.
• Representation of clients in interlocutory proceedings.
• Collaborating with Private Counsel Division on cases when appropriate.
• Other duties as assigned
