Job summary

The Assistant Public Defender position is based in the Ross County Office within the Trial Services Division and serves in Jackson or Ross County courts as a trial‑level attorney providing criminal defense for indigent clients. The role does not include federal post‑conviction or direct appellate work.

The successful candidate will work in a close‑knit team, handle misdemeanor and felony matters, and perform case preparation, hearings, and negotiations to ensure high‑quality representation.

Qualifications

• Admission to Ohio bar pursuant to section 4705.01.
• Before representing in federal court, obtain admission to that court.
• Eligibility to practice under various Ohio bar rules may be accepted in lieu of admission.

Responsibilities

• Prepare cases for trial
• Try cases as lead counsel or co-counsel
• Represent clients in community control violations
• Conduct pre-trial conferences, hearings, and plea negotiations
• Examine witnesses
• Present legal arguments and evidence
