The Triage Nurse provides clinically expert triage services within a physician’s practice. They serve as liaisons between patients and physicians, assessing symptom acuity and communicating findings appropriately. They also provide education to patients and staff concerning clinical issues. Excellent customer service, communication skills, and teamwork are essential, with a focus on putting “Patients First.”

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing positive first impressions and acting as a patient advocate.
  • Triage incoming calls and electronic messages, prioritizing and resolving issues, involving providers as needed.
  • Documenting all communications in the electronic medical record.
  • Scheduling patients for visits based on assessment outcomes.
  • Assisting in obtaining specialist appointments within Northwestern Medicine.
  • Coordinating emergency and hospital transfers, including paperwork and communication.
  • Administering medications and treatments per Nursing Standards and provider orders.
  • Providing education to patients and staff on clinical issues.
  • Monitoring clinical staff activities to ensure coverage and adherence to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Assisting in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Performing additional duties, such as process improvement projects, administering intravenous and injectable medications (demonstrating competency), maintaining quality control, and participating in departmental quality improvement activities.
  • For triage nurses in Immediate Care Clinics (ICC), floating to other ICCs/departments as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited RN program
  • At least 3 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient setting
  • Current Registered Nurse License issued by the State of Illinois
  • CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BSN
  • Specialty certification
  • At least 5 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient setting
  • Spanish language proficiency
