Job Summary: To perform landscape maintenance of trees as required by district standards and to maintain the cleanliness and safe conditions of a school environment.

Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work in Grounds. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Trim trees throughout the district for proper growth, safety and overhanging branches onto buildings, sidewalks and streets
  • Install plant material, fertilize and over‑seed new and existing turf and landscaping
  • Perform landscape maintenance of trees, shrubs and other vegetation
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment assigned to crew
  • Operate power and hand equipment used for landscape maintenance work
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Regular and on‑time attendance required
  • Operate concrete mixers, trenchers, large tractor loaders and field mowers
  • Install and repair PVC irrigation lines
  • Layout and prepare athletic fields as needed
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Assist with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 90 days
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation of bucket truck, chipper, chain saws and equipment preferred

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Most duties are performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions—heat, cold, rain, or wind
  • Work is conducted on school properties, including playgrounds, sports fields, parking lots, sidewalks, and perimeter areas
  • Workers frequently climb trees or use aerial lift equipment (bucket trucks) to access branches and tree canopies
  • Regular exposure to loud equipment such as chainsaws, wood chippers, and stump grinders
  • Tasks may be performed solo or with a crew, requiring good communication and coordination
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (up to 50–75 lbs), including chainsaws and cut branches
