Job description

Title: Groundworker
Type: Full-Time/Non-Exempt
Reports to: Crew Leader/General Foreperson

Essential Functions:

  1. Uses a chainsaw to cut brush, logs, and stumps of larger trees. Works from the ground using gasoline powered chainsaws.
  2. Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris and/or feeds brush into a wood chipper. Gathers brush and carries it to the chipper area.
  3. Works around hazardous equipment and excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, and wood chippers, and must wear proper personal protective equipment.
  4. Exposed to all temperatures and weather; will be exposed to nature, i.e., irritating plants, biting or stinging insects, dust, etc.
  5. May work on rough terrain.
  6. Helps enforce on-the-job safety practices for crew members and safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area.
  7. Cooperates with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, etc. to protect employees and the public.
  8. Trained to perform tree and bucket rescue.
  9. Applies herbicides and growth regulators to stumps and brush.
  10. Drives a truck with an attached brush chipper or other trailing unit.
  11. Keeps work area picked up and orderly.
  12. Carries and lays out tools and equipment at the work site.
  13. Services truck, chipper, and equipment, maintaining them in a neat, clean, and specified mechanical order. Reports the need for maintenance to the crew lead.
  14. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  15. Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  16. Needs to be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times per day.
  17. Must withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks such as rain, heat, sun, cold, and snow.
  18. Must be able to write, read, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
  19. Must be able to communicate with others and represent Wright Tree Service in a professional manner.
  20. Possess the ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis.
  21. Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies (including holidays, weekends, storm work) and will be subject to call-out work.
  22. Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  23. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  24. Maintain a herbicide applicator or operator's certification and license as required by Wright Tree Service and local, state, and federal law.
  25. Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards.
