Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a safety-conscious line clearance tree trimmer to prune, remove, and fell trees near power lines. You will work under supervision, operate climbing gear and rigging, and coordinate with owners and emergency personnel.

You may supervise less experienced crew members after qualification. The role requires knowledge of ANSI standards, electrical safety, and the ability to work long hours in challenging outdoor conditions.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews.
• High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
• Must have First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Basic knowledge of trees near energized conductors.
• Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards.
• Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read circuit maps.
• Knowledge of OSHA electric power standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269.
• Ability to determine nominal voltage and use insulated tools near energized parts.
• Ability to follow instructions and communicate professionally.
• Ability to meet physical demands and work outdoors in rugged terrain.

Responsibilities

• Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs near power lines.
• Load vehicles and equipment with manageable limbs and logs.
• Use climbing equipment, lifts, safety belts, and rigging lines.
• Cut branches aloft and lower them using rigging lines.
• Fell trees or spars and split into pieces.
• Work near energized lines under supervision of a qualified line clearance tree trimmer.
• Inspect and perform routine maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Travel and remain on duty during emergencies or natural disasters.
• Set up warning signs and traffic control devices; coordinate with property owners and emergency personnel.
• Maintain herbicide application certifications and records.

Job description

• Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs near power lines


• Load vehicles and equipment with manageable limbs and logs


• Use climbing equipment, lifts, safety belts, climbing lines, ladders, hand saws, ground saws, and pruners


• Cut branches and trunk sections aloft and lower them using rigging lines


• Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces


• Work near energized power lines under direct supervision of a qualified line clearance tree trimmer


• Potentially supervise non-qualified employees after meeting qualification prerequisites


• Apply herbicides and growth regulators to brush and stumps and maintain application records


• Educate less experienced employees on company policies, safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations


• Repair minor property damage at job sites


• Escalate situations to the General Foreperson


• Feed brush and debris into a woodchipper


• Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, hand signals, and traffic control devices


• Cooperate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel when blocking streets or driveways


• Inspect and perform routine maintenance on company vehicles, equipment, and tools


• Report specialized maintenance and equipment needs


• Travel and remain on duty during emergencies or natural disasters


• Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment

Requirements

• Minimum 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments


• High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required


• Must have valid First-Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire


• Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques near energized conductors


• Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards


• Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps


• Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269


• Ability to determine nominal voltage and use insulated tools near energized parts


• Ability to distinguish exposed live parts from other electrical equipment parts


• Ability to follow instructions accurately and communicate professionally


• Ability to read and write job instructions and safety information


• Ability to recognize poisonous plants and take appropriate safeguards


• Ability to wear required PPE


• Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays, weekends, and storm work; subject to call-out work


• Knowledge of and training in tree and bucket rescue


• Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment


• Ability to work independently and in a group


• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's or commercial driver's license and DOT medical card, as required


• Ability to drive a vehicle with an attached chipper or other trailing unit


• Maintain herbicide application certification or equivalent as required by law and company requirements


• English required for reading, writing, and speaking


• Extensive travel required, greater than 50%


• Ability to meet physical demands, including climbing, lifting, carrying, and maneuvering equipment


• Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain and around electrical, mechanical, chemical, weather, and other occupational hazards
