Job summary

The American Water Works Association in Palm Bay, FL is seeking a skilled water/wastewater plant operator to run and maintain the city’s treatment facilities. You will use SCADA, collect samples, adjust dosing, and coordinate with the Plant Superintendent to ensure continuous operations.

A high school diploma, five years of experience, and a Florida Class A license are required, along with a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus at least five years’ experience in water or wastewater plant operation and maintenance.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class A Water or Wastewater Operator license.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned treatment plant functions and monitor processes to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Collect, analyze, and record lab samples and required analyses.
  • Maintain logs and reports per DEP requirements.
  • Monitor gauges, meters, and controls to implement approved operational changes.
  • Advise supervisor of non-compliance and safety concerns.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, performs technical work involved in the operation of the City’s water and/orwastewater treatment plants and related facilities, ensuring operations are within applicable regulations. Workinvolves performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs to equipment, utilizing SCADA, dosing chemicals,reading various gauges and meters, collecting lab samples, performing and recording required analyses andtests, and inspecting equipment for efficient operation. Independent judgment and initiative are required indeveloping operational decisions and to effectively communicate issues and concerns that may impact personneland/or operations. General maintenance tasks including good housekeeping practices and maintaining theimmediate grounds are required. Reports to the Plant Superintendent, or designee, as assigned.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs responsible and effective on-site operations of assigned treatment plant functions.
  • Monitors all processes, equipment and controls to maintain compliance with applicable federal, state and locallaws, ordinances and regulations.
  • Monitors gauges, flow meters, instrumentation, control panels, and various processes and utilizes the observeddata to assist in making approved operational changes.
  • Checks filters, pumps, chlorinators and chemical feed discharges.
  • Collects, analyzes and relinquishes water and/or wastewater samples, as required.
  • Maintains and submits logs and reports accurately, as assigned, and in the manner required by the Departmentof Environmental Protection.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair of plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors andpumps.
  • Maintains records of plant operation and prepares and submits related reports; monitors and participates inshutdowns and start-ups of equipment as directed.
  • Advises supervisor of general plant operations and any non-compliance situations.

MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school plus a minimum of five (5) years of experience in water or wastewater treatmentplant operation and mechanical repair work. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and have and maintain an acceptable driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possess and maintain a Class “A” Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License from the State ofFlorida Department of Environmental Protection. Out of State candidates applying for reciprocity of the requiredlicense may be considered for this position.
