Job description

The KRS team is looking for dynamic individuals who are highly self-motivated to join our timber preservation crew and enjoy a rewarding career while traveling nationwide. The position involves continuous travel from job to job throughout the United States in company vehicles with rapid advancement opportunities. Crew schedules are 6 work weeks on (with weekends) followed by a week off.

Koppers Railroad Structures, Inc. has been at the forefront of railroad bridge rehabilitation in the United States and Canada since the mid-1950s. We are one of the nation's largest railroad bridge contracting and engineering companies, serving Class 1, regional and short line railroads. Compensation:

The average starting wage for this role will be between $23.00 - $26.00 per hour ($60,000 - $90,000 per year), commensurate with experience. Our weekly lodging allowance is $700 per week and will be paid according to policy guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Extensive hand shoveling/digging around ground line of timber bridges using D-handle spade/shovel, sharpshooter/shovel, crowbar, and pry bar.
  • Apply wood preservative treatments and install plugs with hammer.
  • Drill holes using 1/2" drill and generator.
  • Learn to use climbing equipment (lineman gear).
  • Walk up and down steep slopes on rough ground.
  • Inspect timber bridge and make notes about condition.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Driver's License with a favorable driving record (Limited Class A CDL-no airbrakes is preferred and commands a premium rate).
  • Base knowledge in heavy physical labor (farming, military, ranching, utility work, construction, fence building, hand digging, outdoor labor, heavy landscaping, roofing, etc.).
  • No fear of heights with previous exposure to heights.
  • Ability to successfully complete gas mask, lead exposure, respirator usage and Fall Protection training programs.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • This position involves heavy lifting of up to 70 pounds; long hours of standing, walking, and climbing on remote jobsites; jobsites can be noisy. Ability to read and write are required as the position involves recording of data.
  • This position involves routine exposure to outside weather conditions and work is performed at heights of up to 300'.
  • Occasional work around fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals as well as sources of electricity.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
