Job summary

Veit & Company, Inc. seeks a Superintendent to lead daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects across Veit's divisions. You will manage on-site crews and subcontractors, ensure safety, quality, and compliance, and align work with design specs, budgets, and schedules.

The role serves as a key liaison between field teams, project managers, and clients, driving project execution from start to finish while mentoring staff and maintaining program documentation.

Qualifications

• Two to five years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• OSHA 10-hour (preferred but not required), OSHA 30-hour, HAZWOPER certificate, Excavating Safety Training, Blueprint Training, CPR, First Aid.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, reports, construction plans, construction specifications, and legal documents.
• Ability to use Outlook, Word, Excel, iPad, and iPhone.
• Ability to communicate and schedule project needs appropriately.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written with employees, clients, and other business associates.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical field quantity situations.
• Must possess the ability to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

Responsibilities

• Daily communication with General Superintendents regarding job-specific needs, including workforce and equipment requirements.
• Schedules subcontractors to complete work as needed and monitors their progress.
• Maintains a safe working environment by identifying workplace hazards and taking corrective action.
• Ensures employees have up-to-date information on safety procedures and policies.
• Conducts daily Job Hazard Awareness meetings and weekly safety topics.
• Completes daily logs, equipment and material schedules, and timecards.
• Oversees field personnel and enforces company policies and legal compliance.
• Addresses staff performance issues as they occur.
• Participates in pre-construction meetings and regular job site reviews.
• Provides timely documentation for safety, equipment damage, and injuries.
• Inspects field work and materials for quality compliance and reviews drawings before work begins.
• Responds to inquiries or complaints from customers or regulators.
• Supports training opportunities for staff.
• Keeps supervisor informed of actions affecting operations.

The Superintendent is responsible for managing daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects across Veit's divisions. This role ensures all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design specifications, budget constraints, and project schedules. The Superintendent leads on-site crews and subcontractors, coordinates resources, resolves field issues, and maintains high standards of quality and compliance. Acting as a key liaison between field teams, project managers, and clients, the Superintendent plays a critical role in driving successful project execution from start to finish.

A Day in the Life

• Daily communication with General Superintendents regarding job-specific needs, including workforce and equipment requirements.
• Daily contact with job site crews to ensure project time schedule and workforce needs are being met.
• Schedules subcontractors to complete work as needed. Monitors subcontractor work to ensure work is complete per subcontractor agreement.
• Maintains a safe working environment by identifying workplace hazards and taking corrective action when necessary.
• Ensures employees have up-to-date information on safety procedures and policies.
• Conducts daily Job Hazard Awareness meetings, daily stretching, and weekly Tool Box topics.
• Complete daily record keeping, including daily logs, equipment schedules, material schedules, and timecards.
• Manages field personnel fairly and equitably in accordance with Company policies and procedures and compliance with local and federal laws.
• Addresses staff performance issues as they occur.
• Participates in pre-construction meetings to discuss project start-up and project planning. Prepares and participates in regular job site meetings throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provides timely and accurate documentation for reporting safety issues, equipment damage, and workplace injuries according to Company policies and procedures.
• Ensures all work follows specified quality standards. Inspects field work and materials for quality compliance and reviews the assembly of the manufacturer's literature and drawings before work begins.
• Responds to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or business community members.
• Regular participation in training for construction methods and safety. Supports training opportunities for staff.
• Keeps supervisor informed of known actions, written or verbal, which may affect the ability to perform assignments or adversely affect company operations successfully.

• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
• Must possess the ability to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

Supervisory Responsibility

• The Superintendent/Foreman directly manages each project site's lead personnel and staff.
• Leads safety initiatives across multiple service groups.
• Provides leadership and supervision to field personnel in a fair and equitable manner, adhering to company policies and procedures and complying with local and federal laws.
• Oversees, mentors, and develops staff by providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations to ensure high levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
• Hires, trains, develops, and reviews all direct reports, taking disciplinary action when necessary and in a timely manner, in accordance with company policy.

Other

• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain asatisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
• The position requires 8 to 10-hour workdays and occasional weekends, as needed.
• Must be over the age of 18.
