Job summary

Kentucky Science Center is seeking a part-time Science Content Performer/Actor to engage audiences across Kentucky and Southern Indiana with educational science performances and programs.

You will travel to schools and organizations, memorize scripts, and deliver assemblies, walk-up activities, and enrichment programs while upholding KSC values and mission.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; some college coursework or degree preferred.
  • Experience in education, science, theater, acting, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with K-12 students in an academic, professional, or volunteer setting.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license; able to travel across Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand/walk for long periods.

Responsibilities

  • Present science content in a variety of formats, including: Assembly performances 30-60 minutes, with set pieces and AV; groups of 50+ participants.
  • Walk-Up Activities/Expos: 4-6 minute hands-on activities for small groups (≤10).
  • Enrichments & After School Programs: hour-long hands-on science for up to 25 participants.
  • Outreach & Community Engagement: represent Kentucky Science Center at libraries, festivals and events.
  • Lead short trainings for local volunteers on facilitating activities.
  • Travel to schools/organizations to run educational activities with participants of all ages.
  • Set up and tear down Assembly sets and Walk-Up Activities; load/unload supplies and AV components.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

As a Science Content Performer/Actor, you will engage participants of all ages in educational and entertaining science performances and programming throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. You will be trained by our Visitor Experience team to deliver science curriculum and facilitate activities at schools and organizations You will act as a representative of Kentucky Science Center (KSC), working directly with school/organization staff and local volunteers to ensure that program participants have an engaging and educational experience.

In this role you will primarily focus on performing in our traveling Assembly Programs, Captain Current vs. the Electricity Vampires and Ion Jones and the Lost Castle of Chemistry . Your role includes memorization of assembly show scripts, live performances of assemblies, maintenance and coordination of supplies, logistics, volunteer training, customer service, and set-up and clean-up of programs. During months with lower request for Assembly performances, hours will be supplemented with other Offsite Programs. You may also facilitate science programming on location at Kentucky Science Center if interested.

Responsibilities

Present science content in a variety of formats, including:

Assembly performances: 30-60 minutes in length, includes set pieces, costume, and audio-visual components; typically presented to groups of 50 or more participants.

Walk-Up Activities/Expos: tabletop hands-on science activities presented in a short, 4-6-minute format to small groups of 10 or fewer participants.

Enrichments & After School Programs: teaching an hour-long hands-on science class for up to 25 participants.

Outreach & Community Engagement: representing Kentucky Science Center at libraries, festivals, and other community events, furthering our work of making science accessible to all.

Leading short trainings for local volunteers on how to facilitate our activities.

Act as representative of KSC in off-site locations, consistently embodying and demonstrating KSC’s values and executing its mission.

Engage with the public in a positive and friendly manner and communicate directly with program organizers, coordinators and participants.

Travel to various schools/organizations and facilitate educational activities with participants of all ages

Set up and tear down Assembly sets and Walk-Up Activities, including lifting and carrying supply bins, loading/unloading set pieces and supply bins from KSC vans, and setting up audio-visual components of programs.

Maintain inventory of supplies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent, some college coursework or college graduate preferred.
  • Experience in education, science, theater, acting, or related disciplines in an academic, professional, or volunteer capacity.
  • Experience working with kindergarten through high school students (K-12) in an academic, professional, or volunteer capacity preferred.
  • Comfortable working with the public and committed to providing excellent customer service, experience in customer service or other public-facing roles preferred.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, able to follow directions, able to work independently.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and able to drive throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical duties such as lifting, reaching, pulling, and pushing.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to travel and work some evenings and weekends including overnight stays.
  • Availability includes at least 2 full weekdays (available all day), 3 preferred.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
