Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Flex Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is expected to float to various assigned sites throughout the Bon Secours Mercy Health System, outside of their home location, to provide patient care promoting and restoring patients’ health through the respiratory care process. The RCP is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs respiratory care procedures, diagnostic services, patient monitoring, and patient and staff education according to relevant standards and scope of practice for respiratory therapists.

Tier 3 - System Flex Team Traveler Respiratory Therapist

This role involves being assigned to various sites within the Bon Secours Mercy Health System to provide patient care, promoting and restoring patients’ health through the nursing process, adhering to established standards for respiratory therapy. Responsibilities include analyzing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary teams, providing physical and psychological support, and supervising assigned team members. The RT reports to the System Flex Nurse Manager and must be willing to float outside their home market.

Essential Job Functions

• Data collection, record keeping, product evaluation, and assessment
• Assisting physicians with procedures like bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy, intubation, and invasive monitoring
• Performing CPR and airway management in accordance with AHA ACLS protocols
• Maintaining airway patency, including use of appropriate airways and documenting procedures
• Monitoring and evaluating mechanical ventilators for proper operation
• Performing pulmonary function tests (PFT)
• Assessing patient status through physical examination and data review
• Administering treatments as per physician orders and modifying based on patient response
• Recommending and setting up oxygen therapy and other respiratory treatments
• Instructing patients and families on therapy procedures
• Collecting sputum samples and performing laboratory procedures
• Interpreting blood gases and performing arterial punctures
• Performing EKGs and understanding electronic monitoring
• Maintaining respiratory equipment and supplies
• Responding to cardio-pulmonary emergencies

Licensing/Certification

Current Respiratory Care License in the working state, NBRC credential, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP certifications are required. RRT and CPFT are preferred.

Education

Associate Degree from an AMA-approved Respiratory Care program required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

Work Experience

Minimum of 1 year in an acute care setting with demonstrated clinical competency in at least two environments such as NICU, PICU, ICU/CCU, ED, or general care areas.
