Job description

Overview

Build your career while helping deliver the infrastructure that powers today’s digital world.

As a Project Engineer on Shawmut’s Mission Critical team, you’ll take an active role in delivering data center construction projects—from preconstruction through completion and closeout. Working alongside project managers, superintendents, trade partners, and owner representatives, you’ll help solve field challenges, coordinate critical building systems, and keep projects moving forward.

This role offers hands‑on exposure to the technical and operational sides of construction. You’ll strengthen your project management skills, develop your understanding of complex data center systems, and see how your work contributes to project safety, quality, schedule, and cost.

Responsibilities

Keep Information Moving & Projects Organized

  • Manage submittal, RFI, drawing, and change order logs so project teams have accurate, current information to make decisions and execute work.
  • Coordinate with designers and owner representatives to review and process submittals, shop drawings, and product data.
  • Prepare, track, and expedite RFIs to resolve field questions and help prevent disruptions to construction.
  • Maintain organized project records, including correspondence, meeting minutes, change orders, and pay applications.
  • Support subcontractor pay application reviews and owner billing, gaining practical experience in project financial administration.

Support Project Planning & Financial Performance

  • Work with the Project Manager and Superintendent to develop, update, and maintain the project schedule.
  • Track subcontractor progress against the baseline schedule, flag potential delays, and help develop recovery plans.
  • Monitor subcontract budgets, purchase orders, project costs, and potential changes to support informed financial decisions.
  • Prepare change order requests and assist with subcontractor scope and pricing negotiations as directed.

Connect Trade Partners, Materials & Field Execution

  • Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers across structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, low voltage, security, and controls scopes.
  • Support subcontract and purchase order procurement, reviewing scopes of work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Facilitate and document subcontractor coordination meetings, helping turn discussions into clear actions and following through to resolution.
  • Coordinate equipment deliveries, long‑lead procurement, and on‑site laydown logistics to support the construction sequence.

Help Deliver Safe, High-Quality Facilities

  • Monitor construction activities for alignment with drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and project‑specific standards, including NEC, NFPA, IBC, ASHRAE, and Uptime Institute requirements, as applicable.
  • Conduct and document quality control inspections, identify issues, and coordinate punch list completion.
  • Participate in jobsite safety walks and support the project safety program by helping verify subcontractor compliance with the site safety plan.
  • Assist with commissioning coordination, working with commissioning agents, owner representatives, and subcontractor testing teams to support system testing and verification.

Build Strong Project Relationships

  • Prepare weekly owner reports that clearly communicate schedule progress, cost updates, and emerging risks.
  • Support the Project Manager in delivering project updates to owners, technical representatives, and hyperscale and colocation clients.
  • Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction on permit submissions, inspections, and certificate of occupancy requirements to help move projects toward successful completion.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience in industrial construction; experience on data center, mission‑critical, semiconductor, or large‑scale MEP‑intensive projects strongly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Preferred Certifications: OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Certification, LEED AP or Green Associate, Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or progress toward a PE licensure, Uptime Institute AOS or ATD certification a plus.
  • Additional Role Specific Skills:
    • Demonstrated experience managing submittals, RFIs, subcontractor coordination, and project documentation.
    • Familiarity with data center infrastructure systems including UPS, generators, switchgear, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, BMS/DCIM, and structured cabling is a significant plus.
    • Proficiency in construction management software: Procore, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, Bluebeam Revu.
    • Ability to read, interpret, and coordinate construction drawings, specifications, and single‑line electrical diagrams.
    • Working knowledge of BIM/Revit coordination workflows and clash detection processes preferred.
    • Willingness to travel to project sites and work extended hours during peak construction phases.
