Job summary

STS Technical Services is seeking a Traveling Large Machinist in Mount Airy, North Carolina, to support precision manufacturing operations using large-format CNC equipment. This hands-on role requires programming, setup and operation of large machining centers from complex blueprints and tight tolerances.

The position emphasizes independent tooling, fixturing and machining decisions, with responsibilities spanning from blueprint review to production cycle completion on the shop floor.

Qualifications

• Three to five years of related machining experience.
• At least one year of CNC programming and setup experience.
• Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints.
• Experience using precision measuring tools.
• Strong mechanical aptitude.
• Ability to perform standard and metric calculations.
• Working knowledge of algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical machining and production problems.

Responsibilities

• Review blueprints, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequences and setup requirements.
• Select existing CNC programs or program parts and tooling setups from scratch.
• Determine tooling requirements based on tolerances, material type, quantity and available resources.
• Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials and workpieces.
• Select, align and secure holding fixtures.
• Select, install cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials for milling operations.
• Select, install and adjust tools in automatic tool-change magazines for lathe operations.
• Prepare and load parts into machining centers.
• Operate machining centers through complete production cycles.
• Monitor equipment for malfunctions and out-of-tolerance conditions.
• Adjust machine controls as required.
• Follow written, verbal, diagram and schedule-based instructions.
• Troubleshoot practical machining and setup issues on the shop floor.
