Job summary

STS Technical Services in Mount Airy, North Carolina, seeks a Large Machinist to support precision manufacturing using large-format CNC equipment. The role requires reading complex blueprints, programming and setting up CNC machines, selecting tooling and fixtures, and running large centers from setup to finished inspection.

The ideal candidate will have 3–5 years of machining experience, at least 1 year of CNC programming/setup, and strong math and measurement skills.

Responsibilities

• Review blueprints, manuals, specs and samples to determine dimensions and setup requirements.
• Select existing CNC programs or create programs and tool setups from scratch.
• Determine tooling requirements based on tolerances, materials and production needs.
• Measure, mark and scribe dimensions on materials and workpieces.
• Select, align and secure holding fixtures.
• Install and position cutting tools, attachments and fixtures for milling operations.
• Prepare and load parts into machining centers.
• Operate large CNC machining centers through complete production cycles.
• Monitor operations for malfunctions and out-of-tolerance conditions.
• Adjust machine controls as required.
• Follow written/verbal/diagram/schedule instructions.
• Troubleshoot machining/setup issues on the shop floor.

STS Technical Services is hiring a Large Machinist in Mount Airy, North Carolina, to support precision manufacturing operations using large-format CNC equipment.

This hands‑on role is designed for experienced machinists who can read complex blueprints, program and set up CNC equipment, select tooling and fixtures, and run large machining centers from initial setup through finished‑part inspection.

Position Overview

The Large Machinist sets up and operates large CNC machining equipment used to produce precision metallic components.

This position requires strong blueprint‑reading skills, CNC programming and setup experience, mechanical aptitude and the ability to make machining adjustments based on tolerances, materials and production requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review blueprints, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequences and setup requirements
• Select existing CNC programs or create programs and tool setups from scratch
• Determine tooling requirements based on tolerances, material type, quantity and available resources
• Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials and workpieces
• Select, align and secure holding fixtures
• Install and position cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials for milling operations
• Select, install and adjust tools within automatic tool‑change magazines for lathe operations
• Prepare and load parts into machining centers
• Operate large CNC machining centers through complete production cycles
• Monitor machining operations for malfunctions and out‑of‑tolerance conditions
• Adjust machine controls as required
• Follow written, verbal, diagram and schedule‑based work instructions
• Troubleshoot practical machining and setup issues on the shop floor

• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

• Ability to solve practical machining and production problems
• Ability to work from written, verbal, diagram and schedule instructions

This is an active shop‑floor position that requires regular standing and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Employees may be exposed to dust, oil, moving mechanical equipment and elevated noise levels while working in a hands‑on precision manufacturing environment.
