Role Overview

The primary role of the Dental Assistant is to support the success of the clinicians through effective delivery of the Perfect Patient Experience (PPE), thereby creating a Patient for Life (PFL). Dental assistants perform patient care, office, and laboratory duties, preparing patients for examinations and assisting in providing treatment. They must work effectively with co-workers, patients, and front office staff, sharing ideas constructively and positively. Successful dental assistants listen actively, keep commitments, communicate progress, and address problems constructively.

Specialty Dental Assistants

If assigned within specialty areas such as Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, or Pediatric Dentistry, they will support clinicians within those specialties and may require additional training.

Responsibilities
  • Perform functions according to state’s Dental Auxiliaries Table of Permitted Duties.
  • Participate actively in PPE, focusing on patient needs and concerns.
  • Escort patients and introduce them to team members as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with front and back office teams to ensure smooth scheduling.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile, and cheerful environment.
  • Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, following infection control guidelines.
  • Prepare patients for treatment and assist the dentist to enable efficient, quality care.
  • Complete radiographs and intra-oral pictures efficiently as directed.
  • Prepare tray setups and maintain supplies in each operatory.
  • Keep patients' mouths dry and clear using suction devices.
  • Instruct patients on postoperative and oral health care.
  • Record patient charting and clinician’s notes digitally.
  • Support patient care by presenting treatment records, consents, and health histories.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance per manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Work with Lead Dental Assistant on supply management.
  • Learn and operate technology, providing explanations as needed.
  • Participate in meetings and uphold company culture and standards.
  • Support the implementation of the Perfect Patient Experience process.
  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor, adhering to policies.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; required state training/certification.
  • Valid licenses, registrations, and certifications as mandated.
  • For Specialty Assistants: valid driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation; background checks required.
Preferred
  • One-year certificate from an accredited college or technical school, or equivalent experience.
