Traveling Court Reporter

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship
  • Clearance Requirements: National Crime Information Center (NCIC) with fingerprints and a Drug Screen
  • Estimated Compensation: $28.00 $30.50/Hour (negotiable).
  • Type of Employment: Part-Time, as needed.
  • Travel: Travel is authorized and is required.
  • Relationship: 1099 Independent Contractor.

Summary of Duties

The Court Reporter will provide services throughout the state of Texas. Although most reporting will be related to contested proceedings before the Texas State Office of Administrative Hearings (SOAH), the awarded contractor may also provide services related to the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE), Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), the Texas Commissioner of Education, and/or any other proceedings requested by TEA. The Court Reporter will only receive compensation for work performed as requested by TEA. Services will be requested on an as-needed basis, and there are no guaranteed minimum or maximums. The awarded contractor must meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements throughout the entire term of the contract.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Certification as a court reporter in the state of Texas.
  • Strong typing and transcription skills.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure legal environments.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to legal documentation standards.
  • Experience with courtroom procedures and legal terminology preferred.
  • Ability to travel throughout the State of Texas.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Recording Proceedings

  • Captures verbatim transcripts of trials, depositions, hearings, and other legal events using stenographic machines or voice writing technology.
  • Ensures accuracy by using real-time transcription software to provide immediate text output for attorneys and judges.
  • May be required to read back portions of testimony upon request.
  • Transcription & Certification
  • Converts shorthand notes into official transcripts, ensuring they meet Texas court standards.
  • Certifies transcripts for authenticity and submits them to the appropriate legal parties.
  • Maintains secure records of proceedings for future reference.
  • Must work cooperatively with agency legal staff and attorneys.

Traveling Between Courts

  • Moves between counties or districts as needed, often filling in for absent reporters or covering high-profile cases.
  • Must be adaptable to different courtroom environments and legal teams.
  • May work in federal, state, or municipal courts, as well as private legal settings.

Maintaining Equipment

  • Responsible for the upkeep of stenographic machines, microphones, and recording devices.
  • Ensures software updates and troubleshooting to prevent technical issues during proceedings.
  • May need to carry backup equipment for emergencies.

Adhering to Legal Standards

  • Follows Texas laws and court regulations regarding court reporting, including confidentiality and ethical guidelines.
  • Must be familiar with Texas Government Code Chapter 52, which governs court reporters and shorthand reporting firms.
  • Complies with formatting and submission requirements for official transcripts.

Expense Reimbursement

  • Eligible for travel expense reimbursement and per diem allowances when working outside their home county.
  • Must submit detailed expense reports approved by the presiding judge.
  • Compensation varies based on location and court policies.
