Step Down Unit Nurse in an acute care setting located within a busy patient flow environment, requiring a strong team-oriented approach. The role involves managing patients with diverse diagnoses such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, stroke, COVID, and complex multisystem failures. The assignment includes supporting clinical duties during night shifts, with an emphasis on patient safety, teamwork, and adherence to hospital protocols.

Job Details
  • Shift Hours: 12-hour night shifts (e.g., 1830-0700) with a minimum of 36 hours per week.
  • Required Qualifications: Valid nursing license, BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), NIHSS (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale); 2 years of recent experience in a step down or similar unit; candidates must have a valid drivers license; candidates cannot be full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with the organization for at least 50 miles, with travel restrictions confirmed via license verification.
  • Schedule: Night shifts, including every other holiday; RTO requests for 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract are accepted upfront.
  • Duties: Managing a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6, with virtual care support increasing to 1:6 in June. RN responsibilities include titrating drips such as Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, and Nitroglycerin, as well as IV antibiotics and insulin. RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry strips and respond to bedside and virtual nurse requests. The unit includes patient care assistants at a 1:10 ratio, with advanced ventilator equipment (BiPAP, Airvo).
  • Additional Information: The unit experiences rapid admissions and discharges within the same shift, requiring excellent teamwork, positive attitude, and engagement with patient-centered care. Orientation involves one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts. The shift dress code is navy blue. The unit will transition to virtual nursing in June, which will alter staffing dynamics. Candidates must float to MedSurg, inpatient rehab, or skilled care as needed.
  • Certifications and Experience: Certifications required are ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar setting is preferred, though no experience is mandated for eligibility.
