Job Summary

Hematology/Oncology RN – Med Surg 2 years recent experience required

Position: Hematology/Oncology RN – Med Surg

Location: UMMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center)

Start Date: 6/30

Radius Rule: 50-mile radius restriction applies; Driver’s License required at submittal

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Fingerprinting:
• Remote: allow 10 days
• In-person: available at Jackson or Grenada campus week before start
• Vaccinations:
• Flu vaccine required (only medical exemptions accepted with documented evidence)
• Experience with EPIC is required
  

Unit Details – 5 South Hematology/Oncology

• Certs Required: BLS (ACLS for charge RNs)
• Beds: 32
• Nurse:Patient Ratio: 1:5 typical, occasionally up to 1:6; adjusted for acuity
• Common Diagnoses: Hematologic/oncologic conditions, chemotherapy patients
• Chemo Administration:
• ONC certification not required
• Training provided by manager
• Great learning opportunity
  

Experience Requirements

• Must have Level 1 trauma experience
• Preferred:
• Experience in large, high-acuity facilities
• Familiarity with chest tubes, lines, hem/onc, and chemo
  

Drips & Monitoring

• RNs may titrate Heparin, possibly Amiodarone (before transfer to cardiac unit)
• Tele Monitoring:
• All units have tele capability
• Central monitor station communicates with RNs
• RNs do not need to interpret their own strips
  

Support & Staffing

• Charge RN: May carry light or full patient load if needed
• Educator/Manager: Assigned per unit or shared between small units
• House Supervisor: Present after hours/weekends
• Nurse Aides: Available on all units
• RT Equipment: CPAP/BiPAP at night, RT available; High flow on 2N
  
  

Scheduling & Logistics

• Shifts: 12 hours (7a–7p or 7p–7a)
• Scheduling:
• Travelers fill holes but block scheduling may be accommodated
• Open to weekenders (optional)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other or 2 per month (may increase with need)
• Holiday Rotation: Same as core staff
• No call/standby requirements
• Floating: Within skillset to other Med Surg units (higher acuity to core staff)
  

Dress Code & Orientation

• Scrubs: Solid, professional color (any color OK)
• Orientation:
• Day 1: Logins, Omnicell/Epic access, paperwork
• Followed by 2 shifts with preceptor
