Job Summary

The Registered Nurse on the Med Surg/Telemetry unit provides direct patient care in a fast-paced, post-surgical environment. This unit supports patients recovering from a wide range of neuro, orthopedic, general, and vascular surgeries. The role requires expertise in managing surgical patients, interpreting telemetry strips, and supporting interdisciplinary care.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to surgical and telemetry patients
• Interpret telemetry strips (tech monitors patients; RN reads)
• Manage PCA pumps, narcotic protocols, and reversal agents (e.g., Narcan)
• Administer and monitor patients on TPN, Lipids, and IV antibiotics
• Coordinate with virtual admission/discharge RNs, CNAs, and other support staff
• Participate in sepsis management and titrate heparin per protocol
• Float to like units when needed (no patient load when floating to higher acuity)
  
  

Unit Details

• Beds: 48 (across two buildings)
• Nurse:Patient Ratio:
• Days: 1:4–6
• Nights: 1:5–6
• LPNs and virtual admission/discharge nurses available
• Tele Monitors: Draeger system; monitored by techs, RNs interpret
• RT Support: CPAP, BiPAP, and Airvo managed by RT
• Admissions/Discharges: Up to 8–12 surgical admits per day
  

Required Experience & Certifications

• Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years (1 year must be surgical)
• Certifications:
• BLS – American Heart Association (required)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – Required
• Must-Have Skills:
• Total joint replacement experience
• Experience with TPN, PCA pumps, and narcotic management
• Understanding of sepsis protocols and reversal drugs
  

Schedule & Policies

• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
• Holiday Requirement: Follows core staff rotation
