Unit Summary: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum / Mother-Baby (L&D/PP/MB)

Start Date: July 1

Radius Rule: 50-mile radius

Unit Overview

  • L&D Beds: 4 (separate from postpartum beds)
  • Postpartum Beds: 4
  • OR Suites on Unit: 0 – Cesarean deliveries are performed in the main OR
  • Triage Beds: 0 – One L&D room is designated for triage as needed
  • Nursery: Available (No NICU); Infants <35 weeks transferred
  • Birth Volume:
    • Per Day: 0–4
    • Per Month: 40–50
    • Per Year (2022): 554
  • Common Diagnoses/Patient Types:
    • Term labor
    • Induction of labor
    • SROM
    • Gestational hypertension/diabetes
    • Term and late preterm newborns
    • Newborn jaundice
    • Infants ≥35 weeks

    Staffing & Ratios

    • Staffing Guidelines: In accordance with AWHONN staffing guidelines
    • Charge Nurse: Present; typically not assigned patients
    • Support Staff: Nurse aides (12-hour shifts, not daily)
    • Monitoring Techs: RNs read their own strips; no designated monitor techs

  • Weekend/Holiday Requirements: Yes, as needed
  • On-Call/Low Census Policy: Yes – staff may be placed on-call
  • Floating: Rare; primarily for non-assignment roles (e.g., sitter)
