Required Qualifications
- Valid Physical Therapy Assistant license in compliance with state regulations
- Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC)
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited program in physical therapy
- Physical Therapy Assistant experience; new graduates are welcome
- Other certifications or licenses may be required for this position
Summary
The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a Physical Therapist to help implement treatment plans that improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance functional independence. PTAs assist with therapeutic exercises, modalities, and activities of daily living, document progress, educate patients about home exercise programs, and collaborate with the healthcare team.
Essential Work Functions
- Set up therapy equipment and treatment areas, ensuring all devices and supplies are calibrated, clean, and ready for patient sessions.
- Guide patients through prescribed exercises and activities to improve mobility, strength, and balance, providing hands‑on assistance as needed.
- Observe patient performance, note changes, and report progress or concerns to the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Accurately record patient treatment details, progress, and adjustments in the medical record.
- Instruct patients and caregivers on home exercise programs, assistive device use, and safe mobility techniques.
- Collaborate with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other professionals to coordinate comprehensive care.
- Maintain a safe treatment environment by adhering to infection control protocols, safety guidelines, and regulatory standards.
- Engage in quality assurance initiatives and professional development activities to stay current with best practices.
- Collaborate in discharge planning for smooth transitions to community or home settings.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope of practice.
Required Essential Skills

- English reading, writing, and communication proficiency
- Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills
- Physical abilities: remain in stationary position, move equipment (50–100 lbs), push, pull, and bend
- Interpersonal skills: work effectively with a variety of personnel, present a positive attitude and professionalism
- Technical/motor skills: grasp, fine manipulation, push/pull, assist with procedures and equipment
- Mental requirements: cope with frequent public contact, meet deadlines under pressure, work under supervision or independently, manage irregular schedules, maintain concentration to detail
- Sensory: visual acuity and effective communication
