Job Title: First Assistant Registered Nurse (First Assist RN)**Job Summary:

A First Assistant Registered Nurse (First Assist RN) supports the surgical team by providing direct assistance to the primary surgeon during surgical procedures. The First Assist RN works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other surgical team members to ensure safe, effective, and sterile surgical interventions. They are responsible for ensuring proper care, managing surgical instruments, providing hemostasis, and ensuring patient safety throughout the operation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist surgeons during surgical procedures by providing hands-on support, including retraction, suturing, and controlling bleeding (hemostasis).
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical team members to maintain a sterile and safe surgical environment.
  • Prepare and manage surgical instruments, ensuring they are sterile and ready for use.
  • Assist in positioning and draping patients to ensure optimal access for the surgical procedure.
  • Monitor and manage patient vitals, surgical sites, and patient positioning during surgery.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the surgical field by assisting with equipment setup, instrument handling, and sterile practices.
  • Recognize and respond to changes in the patient’s condition, such as bleeding, hemodynamic instability, or complications.
  • Provide patient care and support during preoperative and postoperative phases, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes and adherence to surgical protocols and best practices.
  • Provide assistance in wound closure, dressing, and other postoperative care activities.
  • Document intraoperative care, interventions, and patient progress according to hospital policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuous education to maintain and enhance surgical skills.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
  • Licensure:
    • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Certification:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Certified Nurse First Assistant (CNFA) preferred
