Huntsville Hospital, a State-designated Level 1 Trauma Center with 881 beds, treats over 2,500 trauma patients annually. As the only Level 1 trauma center in Northern Alabama, we serve as a referral hub for surrounding community hospitals, providing definitive care for trauma patients. Our facility features 24/7 dedicated Trauma APP coverage, and our call schedule promotes a healthy work-life balance. The APPs assist with daily trauma service functions.
The Emergency Department spans more than 63,000 square feet, with treatment spaces for approximately 100 patients, including six trauma suites equipped to handle mass disaster scenarios. All treatment rooms are universal, with patient tracking and advanced cardiac monitoring systems standard. We are the first ED in Alabama to offer Stat Scan technology for rapid diagnosis. We see about 80% blunt and 20% penetrating trauma cases. The trauma call schedule is 1:5, with primary and secondary coverage daily. Our trauma surgeons operate at the 90th percentile of RVUs for trauma and critical care work.
The trauma practice includes elective and emergent general surgery, critical care, and trauma. Our trauma outpatient office is located on campus, supported by a full-time APP Monday through Friday.
