Job summary

Union Health's Trauma Services / ICU Chaplain Office in Terre Haute, IN seeks a compassionate Chaplain to support patients, families, and staff in the ED, trauma, and ICU.

As a visible presence during crises, you will provide spiritual care, facilitate grief support, collaborate with clinicians, and coordinate with clergy and community faith leaders while upholding confidentiality and professional standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in theology, ministry, or related field.
  • Minimum of 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), or completion of 2 units of CPE by the end of two years of employment.
  • Healthcare chaplaincy experience preferred.
  • Two years pastoral ministry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual, emotional, and relational support to patients, families, and staff.
  • Be a visible presence during trauma activations, critical illness, death, grief, and other crisis situations.
  • Coordinate with clergy, funeral homes, and community faith leaders when appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Support memorial and remembrance activities sponsored by the hospital.

The Trauma Services / ICU Chaplain is a key role in providing compassionate, holistic care to patients, families, and staff within the Emergency Department, Trauma Services, and Intensive Care Units at Union Health.

Working as a Trauma Services / ICU Chaplain offers a meaningful and impactful experience as you provide spiritual, emotional, and relational support during some of the most critical moments in a patient's and family's healthcare journey. This position serves as a visible and compassionate presence during times of crisis, critical illness, trauma activation, death, grief, and complex medical decision-making.

Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, social workers, and interdisciplinary care teams, the chaplain assists in addressing spiritual distress, facilitating coping, supporting family communication, and providing faith-based resources that are appropriate to each individual's beliefs and preferences.

Bereavement and End-of-Life Care

The Trauma Services / ICU Chaplain will:

  • Respond to patient deaths in the Emergency Department and ICU.
  • Provide grief support and a compassionate presence for families following a death.
  • Assist families with immediate spiritual needs following a loss.
  • Participate in withdrawal-of-care discussions and comfort care transitions as requested.
  • Coordinate with clergy, funeral homes, and community faith leaders when appropriate.
  • Support memorial and remembrance activities sponsored by the hospital.

Trauma Services / ICU Chaplain Details
  • Provides spiritual, emotional, and relational support to patients, families, and staff within the Emergency Department, Trauma Services, and Intensive Care Units.
  • Serves as a compassionate and visible presence during trauma activations, critical illness, death, grief, and other crisis situations.
  • Provides grief support and compassionate presence to families following patient deaths.
  • Assists families with immediate spiritual and emotional needs following a loss.
  • Participates in withdrawal-of-care discussions and comfort care transitions as requested.
  • Supports patients and families experiencing spiritual distress and assists with coping during complex medical situations.
  • Provides faith-based resources and support consistent with each patient's beliefs, values, and preferences.
  • Collaborates with physicians, nurses, social workers, and interdisciplinary care teams to support holistic patient and family care.
  • Coordinates with clergy, funeral homes, and community faith leaders when appropriate.
  • Supports hospital-sponsored memorial and remembrance activities.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality and professionalism in all patient, family, and staff interactions.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to respond to departmental needs, trauma program activities, and critical patient care situations.
Education

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in theology, ministry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), or completion of 2 units of CPE by the end of two years of employment.

Preferred:

  • Master of Divinity, Theology, Ministry, Pastoral Care, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), or completion of 2–4 units by the end of two years of employment.
  • Working toward Board Certification by the end of three years of employment.
Experience
  • Minimum of two years of pastoral ministry, chaplaincy, or related spiritual care experience preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare, trauma ministry, crisis intervention, emergency response, hospice, or critical care settings strongly preferred.
