Summary:

Responsible for the efficient operation of the Trauma Registry by developing, interpreting, implementing, and maintaining appropriate trauma data collection. The Registry Coordinator is responsible for abstracting accurate information from the medical record and assigning ICD9 codes, E-codes, and procedure codes to the trauma registry patient population by using the International Classification of Disease system to maintain the highest quality of data integrity regularly. The Registry Coordinator will also assign AIS scores by utilizing standards set forth by the AAAM to again ensure the highest quality of data integrity. They are also responsible for physician tracking and profiling for proper completion of trauma data and to assure compliance with standards set forth by The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and St. Rita’s Medical Center. Provides statistical and PI/QI data on the SRMC trauma patient population for the achievement of the highest quality of care. Also utilized for tracking, trending, hospital planning, educational purposes, and Regional, State, and National Registry reporting and credentialing and profiling of physicians involved in trauma care. Manages the department, on an interim basis, in the absence of the Trauma Program Manager in consultation with the Trauma Medical Director and/or the Chief Clinical Officer. Consults with the Trauma Program Manager to assure that all standards mentioned above are met and maintained.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for coordinating all activities relative to coding, scoring, inputting, and reporting of trauma registry patients.
  • Identifies appropriate patients for entry into the trauma registry.
  • Compiles, interprets, and enters highly confidential data gathered from the patient’s records and financial reports into the TraumaBase database program.
  • Responsible for accurately abstracting medical record data and inputting the data into the TraumaBase system to meet internal and external requirements for information.
  • Assigns ICD10 codes, E-codes, and procedure codes to the trauma registry patient. Population by using the International Classification of Disease system to maintain the highest quality of data integrity regularly.
  • Scores all injuries by assigning proper AIS and ISS scores based upon knowledge of rules established by the ACS and AAAM and for utilization of physician profiling and credentialing and to maintain the highest quality of data integrity regularly.
  • Develops, organizes, and prepares the monthly (and as needed) statistical and PI/QI data reports for Trauma Services.
  • The Registry Coordinator must maintain knowledge in regards to coding and scoring standards to have the capabilities to discuss problems and special situations as they occur through the review process.
  • Compile information for statistical reporting for administrative requests, JCAHO, ACS, regional/state/national registries, and other departments to include diagnostic procedure utilization and physician statistical reporting.
  • Maintain acceptable productivity standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining the confidential nature of all medical records/information that he/she comes into contact with.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Employment Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED REQUIRED
  • Associates degree (Nursing, Health Information Management (HIM) or other coding/medical/biological science field) or equivalent combination of education and/or experience that has provided knowledge of healthcare clinical or coding processes PREFERRED
  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) PREFERRED
  • Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) PREFERRED
  • ICD-10 course or refresher within the last 5 years PREFERRED
  • Completion of the latest version of the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine's Injury Scale (AIS) course PREFERRED
