Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing and RN license required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience required.
  • Completion of AIS course within 12 months (AAAM AIS).
  • ICD-10 coding certification within 12 months (ICD).
  • Trauma Data Registry course within 12 months (TDRC).
  • Within 36 months, obtain trauma registries certification or related course (CSTR).

Job Summary

As a Trauma Registrar RN, you will support the Trauma Program by maintaining a complete, accurate, and high-quality trauma registry. You will identify and abstract trauma cases from the medical record, enter and validate required data, and ensure information is maintained according to established trauma registry standards and regulatory requirements.

This role requires strong clinical knowledge, attention to detail, organization, and the ability to accurately interpret medical records. The Trauma Registrar works closely with the Trauma Program Manager, physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff to support trauma program quality improvement, reporting, research, and continued trauma designation.

Essential Functions Of The Role
  • Serve as a resource for trauma registry reports and respond efficiently to requests for trauma-related information using available registry and database resources.
  • Identify appropriate trauma cases and accurately abstract required clinical information from the electronic medical record.
  • Collect, enter, review, and maintain trauma registry data for quality improvement, research, benchmarking, and regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain data accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and integrity in accordance with established trauma registry standards.
  • Review medical records and clinical documentation to accurately capture diagnoses, injuries, procedures, treatments, outcomes, and other required trauma information.
  • Utilize clinical knowledge and data analysis to identify opportunities for trauma performance improvement and support initiatives that improve patient care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify clinical information and ensure accurate trauma case reporting when necessary.
  • Prepare and transmit required trauma registry data to appropriate reporting entities in a complete and timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with Trauma Program leadership, hospital staff, physicians, and other departments to support the hospital's trauma designation and regulatory requirements.
  • Research and enter trauma data into the registry to support ongoing trauma program evaluation, performance improvement, and quality initiatives.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, hospital policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Key Success Factors
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and common trauma-related diagnoses and procedures.
  • Experience with trauma case identification, case abstraction, and data entry preferred.
  • Knowledge of trauma registry processes, data integrity, quality improvement, and clinical research.
  • Ability to interpret medical records and accurately abstract complex clinical information.
  • Knowledge of disease and injury coding and injury severity scoring.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies or missing information within medical records.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry, electronic medical records, information security, medical record management, scanning, email, and database applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Trauma Program leadership, physicians, and hospital staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive patient information appropriately.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Completion of Abbreviated Injury Scale course within first 12 months of employment (AAAM AIS)
  • Securing an International Classification of Diseases 10 Coding Certificate within the first 12 months (ICD)
  • Completion of a Trauma Data Registry course within the initial 12 months (TDRC)
  • Within 36 months, obtain certification in Trauma Registries or complete Advanced Injury Scoring and Statistic course (CSTR)
