Summary

The Trauma Program Coordinator is responsible for the organization of services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to providing care to injured patients. This individual works to collaboratively to enhance the care and treatment of the trauma patient in and around the MyMichigan Medical Center Alma and Clare service area. This position is responsible for the development and advancement of the quality of trauma practice across the continuum of care in compliance with the State of Michigan designation criteria for Adult Level IV trauma Centers and through the provision of patient care, consultation, collaboration, education, and performance improvement. The incumbent, in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director(s), has the responsibility and authority to identify and correct all deficiencies in care of injured patients at MyMichigan Medical Centers Alma and Clare.

Responsibilities
  • (25%)* Ensures compliance with all criteria standards for Adult Level III and IV trauma verification designations by the State of Michigan. Works in close collaboration with the Trauma Medical Staff in a multidisciplinary approach for care of the trauma injured patients. This includes creating/operating a highly effective trauma performance program that functionally addresses all performance issues that arise.
  • (25%)* Evaluates trauma data for a variety of clinical, operational, and system purposes including monthly summaries of all trauma related deaths, pediatric trauma reviews, complications from care, provider peer review, and streamlining identified opportunities for improvement of the injured trauma patient.
  • (25%)* Reviews all traumas for Alma and Clare for accuracy and completeness. Enters trauma charges for both facilities with structured review of trauma activations. Reviews the Trauma Registrars' work and entry into the trauma software.
  • (25%)* Assists with traumas in the department for coordinated care and timely/appropriate documentation. Provides education to the community as per Medical Center trauma designation request and acts as a liaison to administration to represent the trauma program on hospital and regional committees to enhance trauma care.
  • OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fosters cooperation and coordination of services among employees and departments.
  • Communicates openly and freely with all employees and providers in the hospitals.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional development and advancement of clinical practice.
  • Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, standards and laws.
  • Unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
  • Monitors for appropriateness transport destinations of all patients and methods of transport, including air medical utilization.
  • Responds in a timely and appropriate manner to problems voiced by medical staff, employees, patients, and members of the community.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Physicians, surrounding hospitals, other health care agencies and community service agencies to enhance the continuity of trauma patient care services.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Medical Center Alma and Clare patients and potential patients.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Required Within 1 year of hire or transfer.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Required Within 1 month of hire or transfer.
  • FINGERPRIN - Fingerprinting Required
  • NIMS IS 100 - NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System Required Within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • NIMS IS 200 - NIMS IS 200 Basic Incident Command System Initial Response Required Within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • NIMS IS 700 - NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Mgt System Required Within 6 months of hire or transfer.
  • RN - Registered Nurse Required
  • TNCC/ATCN - Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN Required Within 6 months of hire or transfer.
Required Education

Bachelor's degree is required

Bachelor's Degree in nursing culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan. Master's degree in nursing preferred.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in an emergency department required.
  • Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0 33% of the workday) lift or carry 21 50 lbs., frequently 34 66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67 100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
