Job summary

YWCA St. Joseph seeks a Shelter Advocate to provide trauma-informed services to individuals experiencing domestic or sexual violence and homelessness.

You will work within an empowerment model, responding to crises, guiding safety planning, and assisting guests from intake through discharge. The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in a human services field, strong communication skills, and the ability to work respectfully with diverse populations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a human services field or equivalent required.
• Knowledge of domestic & sexual violence dynamics preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Engage and build relationships with diverse populations.
• Intermediate computer skills.
• Must pass State Child Abuse/Neglect screening & Criminal Background Check.

Responsibilities

• Answer crisis hotline calls and provide safety planning, crisis intervention, education and referrals.
• Triage requests for shelter services and complete lethality assessment as appropriate.
• Provide crisis intervention and assist with ex-parte applications for walk-in victims.
• Complete intake paperwork and orientation for new shelter guests.
• Provide services and support to shelter guests throughout their stay.
• Document all services and enter information within 3 days of direct service.
• Maintain statistics and complete reports as assigned.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings; support YWCA mission.
