Job summary

Benefis Health System in Montana is seeking a Trauma Data Abstractor to ensure complete and accurate data for injured and trauma patients. You will abstract trajectories of care, verify information, and enter data into the Montana Trauma Registry using ICD-10CM, AIS, and ISS calculations.

Requirements include trauma registry course, AIS Certification within 1 year, ICD-10 training within 6 months, and certifications such as CAISS/CSTR.

Qualifications

  • Trauma registry course completed or obtained on hire.
  • AIS Coding Certification within 1 year of hire.
  • ICD-10 course completed within six months of hire.
  • CAISS and CSTR certifications within timeframes preferred.
  • Medical background preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and abstract trauma patient data for state registry.
  • Review records to identify trauma activations and meet criteria.
  • Code injuries with ICD-10CM, AIS; calculate ISS.
  • Enter data into Montana Trauma Registry accurately and timely.
  • Work under deadline pressure and handle changing situations.

Assures complete and accurate data is collected and maintained for all injured patients admitted and trauma patients meets the inclusion criteria for the trauma program. Reviews hospital records to locate all trauma activated patients and those injured patients not activated that meet State collection criteria. Collect comprehensive, accurate data relating to trauma patients by abstracting all trajectories of care, verify & update all information compiled & enter data into the State Trauma system in a concurrent manner. Performs coding of injuries, procedures & causes of injuries using standard medical record references, specifically International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Tenth Revision codes, assign diagnoses Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) & ICD-10CM (Clinical Modification) codes, complete Injury Severity Scale (ISS) and other calculations. Responsible for timely data abstraction, entry and management for injured patients meeting Montana Trauma Registry Criteria and/or National Trauma Data Bank criteria.

Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations. Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.

Will perform all job duties or job tasks as assigned. Will follow and adhere to all requirements, regulations and procedures of any licensing board or agency. Must comply with all Benefis Health System’s organization policies and procedures.

Education/License/Experience Requirements:

  • Completion of trauma registry course required or obtained upon hire
  • Completion of AIS Coding Certification required to within once (1) year of hire
  • Completion ICD 10 course completion required within six (6) months of hire
  • Completion of CAISS certification within three (3) years of hire preferred
  • Completion of CSTR certification within five (5) years of hire preferred
  • Medical background is preferred
