Qualifications

Trauma Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)

Part-time | 0.6 FTE

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Trauma Acute Care Surgery Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is responsible for managing and coordinating care for patients under the Trauma Acute Care Surgery Service at Munson Medical Center. The APP works under the supervision of the attending general surgeon, applying clinical expertise in accordance with institutional protocols, physician preferences, and Michigan law. Key duties include assisting in trauma resuscitations, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, managing patients during their hospital stay, and attending daily rounds. The APP must be prompt in trauma and critical care scenarios, support patient care in resuscitative and post-operative phases, and provide medical documentation such as history and physicals, admission notes, and progress updates. The role also involves participating in Trauma Performance Improvement Committee meetings and providing night call coverage. Additionally, the APP assists with the Surgical Critical Care service under intensivist supervision, caring for critically ill patients, including neurocritical and stroke cases.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Manage and coordinate care for Trauma Acute Care Surgery patients under supervision.
  • Assist in trauma resuscitations and perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks.
  • Be available in the ER within 15 minutes for Level 1 Trauma and 30 minutes for Level 2 Trauma activations.
  • Conduct history and physical exams, write admission and daily progress notes.
  • Attend at least 50% of Trauma Performance Improvement Committee meetings.
  • Provide night call coverage and participate in trauma and critical care management.
  • Assist with Surgical Critical Care under intensivist supervision for critically ill patients.
  • Collaborate with emergency physicians during trauma resuscitations until the surgeon takes lead.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Provide 24/7 coverage for Trauma and Critical Care patients.
  • Respond to trauma activations promptly.
  • Manage trauma and critical care patients in the emergency department, including exams, resuscitation, labs, imaging, consultation, and admissions/discharges.
  • Perform procedures such as suturing, chest tube placement, line insertions, and wound care.
  • Document patient encounters thoroughly.
  • Coordinate with OR, Radiology, and other departments regarding trauma patient status.
  • Assist in surgery as needed.
  • Participate in daily rounds, inpatient management, ordering and interpreting labs, and discharge planning.
  • Apply clinical judgment across all age groups.
  • Attend trauma committee meetings regularly.
  • Assist with ICU patient management, including monitoring and procedures.
  • Coordinate with family, consultants, and ancillary services.
  • Engage in self-education and attend monthly grand rounds.
  • Perform bedside procedures as needed.
  • Support ICU patient transfers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director or Clinical Leads.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education / Training: Master's in Nursing or Physician Assistant studies
  • Work Experience: Surgery experience preferred; ICU or emergency experience desirable.
  • Licensure & Certifications: Michigan NP/PA license, current ACLS, PALS, ENPC, APLS, BLS, ATLS. Additional certifications such as FCCS, VCCR, and ENLS are required.

Candidate must obtain clinical privileges through credentialing before service.
