Position Summary
This self-motivated team member works independently and in a team setting to transport patients, equipment, supplies, and lab specimens throughout the hospital. The transporter assists patients in getting on and off beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs, and maintains a clean and safe environment by disinfecting equipment before and after patient use.
Responsibilities
- Essential Functions
- Provides safe and efficient transport of patients across the hospital, assessing each patient to determine the best transport method.
- Communicates vital patient information with department managers, group leads, and relevant team members.
- Meets individual productivity standards as set by the department.
- Transports charts and specimens efficiently and maintains confidentiality.
- Ensures all transportation equipment is clean and sanitary.
- Uses the Epic Transportation Dispatching system effectively.
- Demonstrates outstanding customer service aligned with Orlando Health's mission, vision, and values.
- Informs relevant departments of delays proactively.
- Prevents fire and safety hazards by storing equipment properly.
- Adjusts oxygen flow and determines cylinder volume; understands tank gauge operation.
- Safely removes telemetry units from patients.
- Performs Independent Double Verification using two identifiers and scans patient wristbands.
- Follows hospital policies on safety, dress code, attendance, punctuality, and ID display.
- Handles confidential information per HIPAA and handoff policies.
- Works cooperatively with team members to meet patient and departmental needs.
- Assists with the disposition of deceased persons to morgue or body cooler.
- Distributes and retrieves clinical equipment across the facility.
- Maintains and restocks equipment and supplies.
- Transports medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs).
- Performs additional duties as needed to support departmental operations.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance per policies and standards.
- Complies with all hospital policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Education/Training
- Ability to read and recognize similarities and differences in words and numbers.
- Ability to write simple correspondence and respond to inquiries or complaints.
- Proficient in using department computer systems such as Epic, Bed Tracking, Service Response, and Outlook Email.
- Completion of mandatory educational training.
- Licensure/Certification
- BLS/Healthcare Provider certification within 90 days of hire; renewed every two years.
- Experience
- Six months of customer service or volunteer experience preferred.
