Transportation Worker II - Div. 13 Roadside Environmental

This is a Transportation Worker II position within the Roadside Environmental Unit in Buncombe County. Work involves erosion control, planting, herbicide operations, and general roadside environmental tasks. Responsibilities include planting shrubs, trees, flowers, ground cover, seeding, mulching, installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating hand and power tools, and inspecting equipment. Work is labor-intensive and requires working in diverse weather conditions, terrain, and traffic environments. Night and weekend work, including emergency storm damage cleanup, may be required.

Applicants should be familiar with or able to learn to use small hand tools, power tools, operate augers, and various trucks and equipment. Good communication skills are necessary, and additional duties may be assigned.

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience demonstrating:

  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaws, weed eaters, drills, etc.
  • Experience with Category B equipment (e.g., dump trucks, tractors, hydro seeders, etc.)
  • Experience in applying herbicides and pesticides correctly, including proper storage and disposal.

Additional expectations include: Knowledge of equipment operation principles, ability to follow instructions, perform manual labor, operate equipment, lift up to 50 lbs, climb, bend, work in extreme temperatures, and work during nontraditional hours, including emergencies.

Pre-employment drug testing is required. Employment conditions include completing release and background forms and may involve background checks for controlled substances.

Applicants must meet minimum requirements, including a high school diploma or GED, three years of relevant equipment operation experience or equivalent education/experience, and possession of or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 360 days of hire.
