Qualifications

  • Building & Trade requires 2 years of relevant experience; vocational school can substitute.
  • Equipment Operator requires a valid class A or B CDL; substitutions not allowed for CDL.
  • Mechanic requires 2 years of automotive/mechanic experience; vocational school can substitute.
  • Traffic Control requires 2 years in roadway maintenance or related fields; vocational program substitutes may apply.

  • Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.

  • Transport fuel to equipment.

**Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.”

The Transportation Worker 2 performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Position will be assigned in one of the following areas of assignment: Auto Body, Bridge Maintenance, Building and Trade, Equipment Operator, Mechanic, or Traffic Control. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, bridge structures. Installs and removes signposts; erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects. Builds forms and finishes concrete. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work at the full performance level in the mechanical or building trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of state facilities and buildings. Performs auto body repairs and overhaul of gasoline or diesel-powered engines and equipment. Performs related work as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.

In the area of assignment of Auto Body, Bridge Maintenance, Building and Trade, Mechanic and Traffic Control, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION:

No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Auto Body Repair: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience performing auto body repair. Auto Body Repair Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
  • Bridge Maintenance: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in bridge construction, roadway maintenance, bridge maintenance, or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways. Bridge Maintenance Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
  • Building & Trade: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in construction, maintenance, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC work. Building & Trade Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
  • Equipment Operator: A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. No Substitutions for Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
  • Mechanic: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Mechanic Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
  • Traffic Control: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways. Traffic Control Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
