State of Utah (UDOT) seeks a Transportation Technician I/II to maintain highways and landscape assets in Murray, UT. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Identify noxious and invasive weed species and control them along state right-of-way
  • Safely operate and maintain equipment used for herbicide applications
  • Oversee, maintain, and repair landscape irrigation systems
  • Perform seeding and revegetation on disturbed ground
  • Perform tree trimming, pruning, and removal as required
  • Collect, transport and dispose of liquids, sludges and solid waste using a vacuum truck
  • In winter, clear snow and ice from roadways with snowplows and heavy equipment
  • Willing to work outdoors in varied weather and perform physically demanding tasks

Transportation Technician I/II

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a hard-working, hands-on individual to join our landscape crew. In this role, you will be part of the front-line crew responsible for the upkeep of Utah’s highways, ensuring our infrastructure remains safe for the traveling public in all conditions.

This position may be filled as a Transportation Technician I or II, depending on qualifications and experience. Most employees start at the Technician I level and advance as they complete training through UDOT’s Transportation Education Program (TEP).

Principal Duties
  • Identify noxious and invasive weed species and control them along state right-of-way using mechanical and chemical methods.
  • Safely operate and maintain specialized equipment used for herbicide applications.
  • Oversee, maintain, and repair landscape irrigation systems.
  • Perform seeding and revegetation operations on disturbed ground to restore growth,
  • Perform tree trimming, pruning, and removal as required.
  • Collect, transport and dispose of liquids, sludges and solid waste using a vacuum truck.
  • For winter operations, clear snow and ice from state roadways using snowplows, graders, blowers, and related heavy equipment.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.

Maintenance Technicians are also trained to support UDOT’s construction and permit projects. After approximately 18 months, you will have the opportunity to cross-train in construction inspection and materials testing, allowing you to build a versatile career across different department operations.

Requirements For Success
  • A Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire (UDOT provides paid training and testing).
  • Ability to report to the Landscape/Stormwater Station within a 30-minute response time and maintain 24-hour availability for operational needs.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Maintain a personal smartphone with a data plan (eligible for a monthly taxable department allowance).
  • Commitment to completing required certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

  • A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Experience operating vacuum trucks, hydro-vacs, or similar heavy environmental equipment.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and snow removal.
  • Professional work experience operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, etc.).
  • Experience with mechanical maintenance or equipment repair.
  • Familiarity with UDOT maintenance or construction standards.
  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Supplemental Information
  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
  • This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
