Job summary

State of Utah is seeking Maintenance Technicians at the Murray Maintenance Station to perform general maintenance on state routes and drains. You will operate snowplows, salt spreaders, and other heavy equipment during winter storms, while documenting work via department software.

Ideal candidates are capable of lifting 50 lbs, report within 30 minutes, and hold a CDL or commit to obtaining one within six months. Pre-employment checks and random drug testing apply.

Qualifications

  • A Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire (UDOT provides training).
  • Ability to report within 30 minutes to Murray Maintenance Station.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must maintain a smartphone with data plan (monthly allowance).
  • Commitment to certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.

  • Perform general maintenance on state routes, highways, and drainage features.
  • Operate heavy machinery including snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on heavy equipment (front-end loaders, backhoes, graders).
  • Utilize department software to track assets and document work performed by UDOT crews and contractors.
  • Manage roadside vegetation with various methods, including herbicide application.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather and perform physically demanding tasks.

About The Role


  • Salary Range: $21.28 - $33.71

  • FT/PT Status: Full Time

  • Background Check: You must successfully pass a criminal history check

  • Drug Test: Yes, pre-employment and random after hire

  • Current CDL Holders: Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders

  • Schedule Code: B - Competitive Career Service (12 month probationary period)

  • Location: Murray Maintenance Station, 5823 S Commerce, Murray, Utah

Key Responsibilities


  • Perform general maintenance on state routes, highways, and drainage features to ensure infrastructure longevity.

  • Operate heavy machinery-including snowplows, salt spreaders, and blowers to clear state roadways during winter storms.

  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, and graders.

  • Utilize department software to track assets and document work performed by both UDOT crews and contractors.

  • Manage roadside vegetation through various methods, including herbicide application.

  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.



Maintenance Technicians are also trained to support UDOT's construction and permit projects. After approximately 18 months, you will have the opportunity to cross-train in construction inspection and materials testing, allowing you to build a versatile career across different department operations.



Qualifications


  • A Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire (UDOT provides paid training and testing).

  • Ability to report to the Murray Maintenance Station within a 30-minute response time and maintain 24-hour availability for operational needs.

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

  • Maintain a personal smartphone with a data plan (eligible for a monthly taxable department allowance).

  • Commitment to completing required certifications and continued education through the UDOT TEP program.



Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:



  • A current Class A Commercial Driver's License.

  • Experience in roadway maintenance and snow removal.

  • Professional work experience operating heavy equipment (loaders, backhoes, etc.).

  • Experience with mechanical maintenance or equipment repair.

  • Familiarity with UDOT maintenance or construction standards.

  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.



Supplemental Information


  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required for all commercial driver license and learner permit holders.

  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire.

  • This role requires frequent exposure to live traffic, hazardous weather, and physical exertion (standing, crouching, and lifting) for long periods.
