Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent performs a wide variety of professional land surveying work, primarily in an office setting and occasionally in a field setting. Incumbent will provide technical expertise, knowledge and ability in processing field collected surveys containing Conventional, GPS/GNSS and/or LIDAR data for the preparation of maps and documents needed to support Caltrans Project Development teams. Incumbent will provide technical expertise, knowledge and ability in reviewing and creating construction staking packages. Incumbent will provide knowledge and ability in data transfer functions in support of various databases and GIS systems.

Working Conditions

• While at the base of operations, will work in a climate-controlled office building under artificial light.
• Normal work assignments are within District 3 but on occasion may include field work outdoors or temporary work assignments within Caltrans North Region or statewide;
• Will work at workstations in single or shared cubicles;
• Normal work schedule consists of five 8-hour days each week. Normal work hours are 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day. Alternate work schedules may be required or requested. There is a possibility of temporary work schedule changes as projects dictate;
• Overtime may be required and vacations may be restricted as departmental workload dictates;
• Assigned outdoor tasks may occur in various types of terrain and weather conditions and include exposure to dirt, noise, traffic, and moving across uneven surfaces.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving tele work policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their work sites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
