Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in administration, logistics, information systems, management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may substitute.
  • Five years of experience as a school bus driver or in transportation, logistics, fleet, or related operations preferred.
  • Three years of supervisory, lead, or coordinator experience in transportation or a related field.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise drivers, bus monitors, and transportation staff to ensure safe, reliable, and professional service.
  • Assist in recruitment, onboarding, and training of drivers and bus monitors.
  • Provide coaching and evaluate employee performance in line with policies and labor agreements.
  • Observe routes and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Lead investigations and disciplinary actions as assigned.
  • Enhance productivity and team cohesiveness among staff.
  • Investigate accidents and safety concerns; document and follow up with corrective action.
  • Enforce compliance with laws, regulations, and district policies.
  • Support fleet maintenance and monitor vehicle readiness and safety inspections.
  • Utilize routing, GPS, telematics, and transportation software to support daily operations.
  • Coordinate with dispatch, routing, and IT for system issues and upgrades.
  • Serve as liaison with parents, drivers, administrators, dispatch, and management.
  • Prepare reports and documentation on incidents, operations, staffing, and compliance.
  • Assist in development and implementation of transportation policies and procedures.

The Transportation Supervisor provides frontline leadership and oversight for daily student transportation operations, including field supervision of drivers and bus monitors, safety and regulatory compliance, fleet and equipment readiness, and transportation technology systems. This position supports efficient, safe, and compliant transportation services by supervising staff performance, responding to incidents and emergencies, coordinating with dispatch and routing, supporting fleet maintenance activities, and utilizing transportation information systems to monitor performance and improve operations. The Transportation Supervisor reports to the Director of Transportation and/or designated Transportation Managers.

SALARY RANGE: $90,605-$108,186

Field Operations and Staff Supervision
  1. Supervise and support drivers, bus monitors, and assigned transportation staff to ensure safe, reliable, and professional service delivery.
  2. Assist in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and on-the-job training of drivers and bus monitors.
  3. Provide coaching, mentoring, and peer support to enhance student management skills, communication techniques, and employee performance.
  4. Assist with conducting staff evaluations in alignment with district policies, labor agreements, and regulatory requirements.
  5. Observe drivers on routes, bus stops, and school zones to assess driving performance, student management, and compliance with safety and operational standards.
  6. Lead or participate in investigations, interviews, disciplinary conferences, and corrective or disciplinary actions as assigned.
  7. Enhance productivity, engagement, and team cohesiveness among assigned staff.
Safety, Compliance, and Incident Response
  1. Investigate accidents, incidents, complaints, and safety concerns; ensure appropriate documentation, follow-up, and corrective action.
  2. Enforce compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, including traffic laws, safety regulations, drug and alcohol testing protocols, and district policies.
  3. Implement and support district student discipline policies related to transportation.
  4. Respond to emergency situations during and outside of standard hours to resolve immediate transportation concerns, including participation in a rotating on-call schedule as required.
Fleet and Equipment Oversight
  1. Assist in monitoring vehicle roadworthiness and coordinate with maintenance staff to ensure buses and district vehicles meet safety and inspection standards.
  2. Provide leadership to mechanics and staff supporting shop maintenance operations. Coordinate with Manager(s) to perform performance evaluations and personnel investigations.
  3. Support preventative maintenance efforts by identifying field-observed vehicle issues and communicating with fleet staff.
  4. Assist with monitoring fuel usage, vehicle utilization, and operational efficiency using telematics and GPS data as appropriate.
Transportation Systems and Data Support
  1. Utilize routing, scheduling, GPS, and transportation software systems to support daily operations and identify service issues or evaluate efficiencies.
  2. Assist in monitoring student ridership, route data, and operational metrics to support reporting and decision-making.
  3. Provide basic technical support and user guidance to staff for transportation-related software, equipment, and applications.
  4. Coordinate with transportation management and IT staff regarding system issues, upgrades, and data accuracy.
Communication and Coordination
  1. Serve as a liaison between parents/guardians, drivers, school administrators, dispatch, and transportation management to resolve issues and concerns.
  2. Coordinate regularly with dispatchers, routers, fleet staff, and managers to identify field issues, operational efficiencies, and service improvements.
  3. Prepare reports, correspondence, and documentation related to incidents, operations, staffing, and compliance.
  4. Support development and implementation of transportation policies and procedures.
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience / Training:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in administration, logistics, information systems, management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may substitute.

Licenses / Certifications (or willing to acquire within 90 days):
  1. Valid Washington State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with applicable endorsements.

  3. Washington State Driver Trainer Certification as required by the district within one year of employment.
  4. Additional certifications related to fleet, safety, inspections, or systems preferred.
Knowledge Of:
  1. District policies and procedures; federal and state laws governing pupil transportation.
  2. School bus operations, fleet maintenance principles, and safety standards.
  3. Accident investigation and prevention practices.
  4. Transportation routing, dispatching, GPS, telematics, and related software systems.
  5. Emergency management and crisis response procedures.

Physical/Mental/Motor Demands:

While performing duties of this position, the employee experiences frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, via video conference and computers, or over the telephone. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period of time. Vision: Frequent near acuity, occasional far acuity, and color vision. Vision to read printed and online materials, computer screens, or other monitoring devices. Strength is generally sedentary/light - exert force up to 10-25 lbs., occasionally; 10 lbs. frequently; negligible force, constantly.

Work Environment

Climate-controlled office setting with temperatures ranging from mild to moderate cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods. Will include driving school buses or other district vehicles in various road and weather conditions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communication.
